In 1964, the BBC secured rights to adapt any five Sherlock Holmes stories with an option for a further eight from the Doyle estate. A handful of Doyle's stories were excluded from the deal: The Hound of the Baskervilles because Hammer Films' rights would not expire until 1965[2] following their 1959 film adaptation, and "A Scandal in Bohemia", "The Final Problem" and "The Adventure of the Empty House" which had been secured by producers of the Broadway musical Baker Street.

Thomas Crown, a young, handsome millionaire pulls off the perfect crime by having five men rob a bank and dump the money - approx. $2.6 million - in a trash can, which Crown retrieves later and stores in a Geneva bank. Vicki Anderson, an independent insurance investigator, is contracted to investigate the heist. As she digs deeper into the case she begins to suspect Crown's involvement. In an attempt to get closer she begins seeing Crown socially, openly telling him she is investigating him. Their relationship evolves into an affair; this affair however is threatened by Vicki's moral obligation to bring Thomas Crown to justice. Crown decides to organize another caper for the sheer sake of rebelling against the authority. He asks Vicki to join him in his flight afterwards, but she betrays him to her contractors. Moving in to make the arrest, she finds Crown sent a messenger in his place with a salutation. Crown is then shown flying away in a jet, a smile on his face.

Thomas Crown est apparemment un milliardaire honnête, fréquentant les meilleurs clubs de Boston, séduisant et séducteur. Mais à l'aide de quelques complices, il organise le hold-up du siècle en dévalisant en plein jour la banque située en face de chez lui. Après avoir déposé le magot en Suisse, sa route croise celle de Vicky, une détective employée par la compagnie d'assurance de la banque. Très vite, cette dernière le soupçonne. Elle se lie à lui, devient sa maîtresse et se trouve alors partagée entre l'amour et sa conscience professionnelle. Elle oublie cependant que Crown est tout sauf naïf.

Sarah Deever (Sandy Dennis) is an idealistic young woman living in Brooklyn. Her altruistic nature finds her taking in visitors for a month at a time to help them in their time of need. Charlie Blake (Anthony Newley) is her latest reclamation project, a cardboard-box factory worker and owner of an annoyingly loud alarm on his wristwatch. Charlie gains entrance to her apartment and eventually her heart when he reveals he always wanted to be a poet. Sarah seeks to overcome her own problems by helping those in need, but her need for Charlie's love soon supersedes her initial intentions. He is allowed to stay for the month of November as she adheres to her traditional deadline on guests..

Rebellious students at an English private school plan a violent revolt against their repressive environment in director Lindsay Anderson's highly acclaimed but extremely controversial drama. Centering on a small group of non-conformists led by Mick Travis (Malcolm McDowell), the film paints a distinctly negative picture of the British school system and, by extension, English society. Seeing the powers-that-be as humorless, bureaucratic, and needlessly restrictive, Mick and his cohorts indulge in small acts of rebellion, including sneaking into town to romance a local waitress. Their actions are discovered and punished with harsh beatings, leading the students to plot revenge. This effort culminates in the film's most famous sequence, a surrealistic depiction of a bloody uprising by the students against the adult world. Daring and unpredictable in content and form, If… mixes color and black-and-white cinematography as easily as it mingles satire with dark fantasy. The film's ambiguous attitude toward violence caused controversy at the time, as many commentators saw the film as a potential incitement to violence. It became a great success among younger, counter-culture audiences who appreciated the audacious shock tactics and embraced the satirical, anti-establishment message. Often compared to Jean Vigo's French classic Zéro de conduite, which also featured surrealistic boarding-school rebellion, If… has become a high point in the cinema of youth rebellion.

Eclipse Series 37: When Horror Came to Shochiku (1967-1968) [ReUp] Movies

Following years of a certain radioactive beast’s domination at the box office, many Japanese studios tried to replicate the formula with their own brands of monster movies. One of the most fascinating, if short-lived, dives into that fiendish deep end was the one by Shochiku, a studio better known for elegant dramas by the likes of Kenji Mizoguchi and Yasujiro Ozu. In 1967 and 1968, the company created four certifiably batty, low-budget fantasies, tales haunted by watery ghosts, plagued by angry insects, and stalked by aliens - including one in the form of a giant chicken-lizard. Shochiku’s outrageous and oozy horror period shows a studio leaping into the unknown, even if only for one brief, bloody moment.

Some of you might have already met this marvelous collection on DVD but for the first time in the web it is uploaded as separate avi's so that each cartoon is just 25 to 120 MB in size - pretty handy to download. An extraordinary collection of Russian most important animated short films by Russia's world renowned directors and artists. Winners of many top prizes in various countries. Old doesn't mean not worth watching. Some animations are still describing problems nowadays. Sometimes you don't even need words to understand meaning of it. If you have any love of animation at all – the artistry, the depth, the impact – the “Masters of Russian Animation” volumes are a must own.
