The 18th century experienced a mass migration of musicians from Italy – hitherto regarded as “the home of music” – seeking better fortunes in nations to the north. Giacobbe Basevi Cervetto, Giambatista Cirri and Francesco Geminiani went to London, Ridolfo Luigi Boccherini to Madrid. Antonio Vivaldi aimed for Dresden though never arrived, having died en route in Vienna.

'The Golden Age of the Cello in Britain' features works by Emanuel Siprutini, Stephen Paxton, Walter Clagget, James Hook, Hugh Reinagle, Rovert Lindley and others."In the 18th century, London was a centre of extraordinary vivacity for European music, an ideal place for virtuosos of any nation in search of fame. That's what we knew very well when we decided to dedicate one of our recordings to the fortune of cello in Great Britain. Yet we had never suspected that we were going to face such an enormous quantity of compositions for our instrument of such a high and constant quality. Hundreds of chamber sonatas and duets for two cellos, from the easiest ones to the most demanding and virtuosic, not a single page left us indifferent: each one brought with it something that captured our interest and ignited our imagination, each one managed to arouse an enchantment, to transport us lightly or in gravity from vertigo to vertigo, and leave us inebriated with ancient scents and distant memories, as if drunk by a generous, intense red wine, tapped from fine barrels where it had matured to perfection."

The Hamburg-born Ferdinand Thieriot (1838–1919) not only shared a teacher – Eduard Marxsen – with Brahms; both composers use a very similar musical language, one which is richly melodic and effortlessly contrapuntal. The musicologist Wilhelm Altmann wrote that ‘Thieriot’s chamber music is without exception noble and pure. He writes with perfect command of form and expression’ – as the works on this second Toccata Classics volume prove, in their exquisite balance of depth and beauty.

After a double album dedicated to Boccherini and acclaimed by critics, Ophélie Gaillard and the Pulcinella Orchestra reveal the incredible sound palette of Vivaldi, one of the most brilliant venetian musicians. Drawing on the finest cello works of the composer, Ophélie Gaillard’s selection places great emphasis on the concerto, for one, two or even four performers. It also includes an exclusive reconstruction of the Concerto RV 788. The vocal interventions of Lucile Richardot and Delphine Galou light up the program like rays of sun through the clouds. The album alternates between moments of great emotion, sometimes even dolorous as in the Largo of the Concerto RV 416 and moments of passion and frenzy (in the concertos RV 419 or 409) that evoke the Summer from the Four Seasons. This music thus unveils all its mysteries in the interplay of lights and shadows, giving its name to this recording.

Pascal Rogé, long considered the greatest exponent of French piano repertoire is joined by his pianist wife Ami in a program devoted to Les Six – the group of composers brought together by Jean Cocteau in 1917 and who created a musical reaction to the suffocating influence of German romanticism upon French musical culture. Based in Montparnasse the name was inspired by Balakirev’s ‘The Five’ and the journalist Henri Collet’s 1920 article ‘Les cinq Russians, les six Français, et M.Satie’. Satie gets a look in on this album with his ‘Parade’ closing the programme. The album includes the 1920 L’Album des Six, Scaramouche by Milhaud, Cinq Bagatelles for piano 4 hands by Auric, Two Pieces for 4 hands op.7 by Durey and works by Honegger and Tailleferre.

One of the best-known cellists of his generation and of the recording era overall, Yo-Yo Ma is recognized not only for his technical virtuosity but for his engaging interpretative ability, whether the tone is delicate, plaintive, playful, or impassioned. After breaking through with a collection of Bach cello suites in 1983, his ambitions and his appeal stretched far beyond the classical sphere via popular collaborations with such artists as jazz vocalist Bobby McFerrin (1992's Hush) and bluegrass musicians Stuart Duncan and Chris Thile (2011's The Goat Rodeo Sessions).

This selection of chamber compositions for the cello aims to reveal the gradual birth of the romantic idea of music in the middle of the historical period called Classicism though the works of Ignaz Joseph Pleyel, Francois Cupis de Renoussard, Domenico Lanzetti and Jean Bathasar Tricklir.Although still partially formulated on the late eighteenth century model, these works go beyond the usual aesthetic formulas of their time, showing the restlessness and curiosity for the new horizons that revolutionary thought had opened to the eyes of the European minds, in the footsteps of "sentiment" and above all of a new mythology which, as Friedrich von Schlegel wrote: "must be formed by the extreme depth of the spirit ".
