Writer/director Brad Anderson, known for whimsical romantic comedies like Next Stop, Wonderland, was inspired by the astonishing, creepy visage of an abandoned mental hospital in Danvers, MA, to make the intense psychological horror film Session 9. The film stars the redoubtable Scottish actor Peter Mullan (from Ken Loach's My Name Is Joe) as Gordon Fleming, a new father struggling to keep his asbestos removal company afloat. Desperate to bring in some money, the normally deliberate and careful Gordon gets the contract by promising that his company can clear out the creepy deserted building in a week's time. Assisted by his right-hand man, Phil (David Caruso), Gordon hires a crew and, pressed by the nearly impossible deadline, gets the hazardous work underway. But each man on the crew harbors a dangerous secret, and it's only a short time before the haunted atmosphere of the asylum – where cruel and primitive means were used to control unstable patients – begins to work its dark spell on them.

Director Ahmet Uluçay's first feature tells the coming-of-age story of two friends whose passion for cinema is unstoppable. Recep and Mehmet dream of becoming film directors, but Recep's apprenticeship to a watermelon vendor and Mehmet's to an abusive barber yield little money, so the movie camera in a shop window is only a dream. Undaunted, they build a projector out of wood and a battery-run lamp, and manually pull scavenged filmstrips through the gate, trying to achieve the mystical formula of 24 frames per second. Along the way, Recep falls in love with Nihal, a haughty town beauty who refuses to return his affection, and to further complicate matters, Nihal's younger sister Güler cherishes unrequited feelings for him. Frequently made to feel inferior by the city dwellers, the boys hope that the cinema will prove their salvation. Are their dreams as impossible as boats made out of watermelon rinds?

In 1984, Moroder compiled a new restoration and edit of the famous silent film Metropolis and provided a contemporary soundtrack to the film. This soundtrack includes pop tracks from Pat Benatar, Jon Anderson, Adam Ant, Billy Squier, Loverboy, Bonnie Tyler and Freddie Mercury. He also integrated the old-fashioned intertitles into the film as subtitles as a means of improving continuity, and he also played the film at a rate of 24 frames per second. Since the original speed was unknown this choice was controversial. Known as the "Moroder version", it sparked debate among film buffs, with outspoken critics and supporters of the film falling into equal camps
