Essential: a masterpiece of rock music

Deeply inspired by the rise and fall of Vince Taylor (whom Bowie incidentally met in 1971). David/Ziggy will mix this story with science-fiction themes, the atmosphere of the star rock system mixing the whole stuff with his androgynous look. Ziggy will appear as such on stage. Intelligent glam rock? Probably.

Reality is the 23rd studio album by David Bowie. A contemporary review of the album by the BBC called the album "a proper album, with a beginning, a middle and an end. It's direct, warm, emotional honest, even and the surfeit of pleasingly deceptive musical simplicity allows the irony of the central concept – that there is no such thing as reality anymore – an opportunity to filter through. It's also rather lively and convincing". Bowie and Tony Visconti produced both the stereo and 5.1 mix in the studio as the album was recorded.

This black vinyl 45 rpm 12” single features the first appearance of the full length demo of ‘Let’s Dance’, previously released in an edited form through digital download and streaming services for David’s birthday on 8th January this year. The full length version clocks in at 7.34, compared the edit which is 5.19 in length. Both versions were mixed by Nile Rodgers (original co-producer of the demo with David) in December of last year. The demo is backed by the live version of ‘Let’s Dance’, which was recorded live at Pacific National Exhibition Coliseum in Vancouver on 12th September 1983 and mixed by Bob Clearmountain. This version can be seen on the Serious Moonlight concert film, and was also previously available on the reverse of the Australian David Bowie Is exhibition as an exclusive yellow vinyl 7” single. The sleeve of the 12” single is a colour variation of the original Let’s Dance single cover.

The Concert for New York City was a benefit concert, featuring many famous musicians, that took place on October 20, 2001 at Madison Square Garden in New York City in response to the September 11, 2001 attacks. The concert was organized by Paul McCartney and included many of his legendary British contemporaries, including The Who, Rolling Stones bandmates Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, David Bowie, Elton John, and Eric Clapton. American artists included Bon Jovi, Jay-Z, Destiny’s Child, The Backstreet Boys, James Taylor, Billy Joel, Melissa Etheridge, Five for Fighting, Goo Goo Dolls, John Mellencamp with Kid Rock, and a humorous performance by Adam Sandler.

Lost Highway is the soundtrack album for the 1997 David Lynch film of the same name. It was produced by Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), and includes original music from the film recorded by Reznor, Angelo Badalamenti and Barry Adamson, as well as songs by other artists used in the film. The album reached No. 7 on the Billboard 200 and reached Gold status in the United States.

Before reading my short review of this album, I have to admit being a bit biased. I really love this style of early English progressive rock.
