38 Special was formed in 1974 by lead vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Donnie Van Zant (brother of Ronnie and Johnny Van Zant, both Lynyrd Skynyrd) and Don Barnes in 1974 in Jacksonville, Florida - They are best known for their early 1980's hit singles "Hold On Loosely" and "Caught Up in You", along with other Top 40 Billboard Hot 100 chart entries in the 1980s and early 1990s, including "Rockin' into the Night" or "Wild Eyes Southern Boys".

Rock & Roll Strategy is the eighth studio album by the southern rock band 38 Special, released in 1988, and their final album for long-time label A&M Records. It was the first album to feature the new vocalist and keyboard player Max Carl. "Special Forces" contains 38 Special's best song in "Caught Up in You," a hook-filled, smoothly sung radio rock gem that gets its energy from the grace and power of its chorus. But the hooks and the well-proportioned rhythms don't stop there. "You Keep Runnin' Away" gave the album its second charted single, which peaked at number 38, and the borderline boogie rock dash of "Rough Housin'" is among Special Forces' best cuts. Even secondary efforts like "Chain Lightnin'" and "Breakin' Loose" fit in comfortably with the rest of the tracks, offering up a hearty dose of the group's early Southern rock taste.

Special Forces is the fifth studio album by southern rock band 38 Special, released in 1982. The band embarked on the Special Forces Tour to support the album. Three of the four charted singles from the album were co-written with Survivor's Jim Peterik, including "Caught Up In You", the band's first Top 10 Billboard Hot 100 hit.

Building on the bandmembers' own personal accomplishments that came from the Rockin' Into the Night album, .38 Special released an even stronger bunch of songs a year later with Wild-Eyed Southern Boys. Focusing on the same Southern-based rock & roll formula, the efforts from Southern Boys contain a little more guitar zing while complementing the band's ability to produce marketable radio music. "Hold on Loosely," with its smooth vocal stride, managed to peak at number 27 in April of 1981, giving .38 Special its first Top 40 single, and the title track, "Honky Tonk Dancer," and "Back Alley Sally" keep a homespun flavor alive and well, indicating that the band's Southern roots haven't been dismissed completely.
