Leo Kottke's wide-release debut came about after he sent a cassette to John Fahey's Takoma label. Not surprisingly, it recalls Fahey's work in a number of respects: the synthesis of numerous influences from blues, pop, classical, and folk styles, the weirdly titled instrumentals, even the tongue-in-cheek liner notes. Kottke's brand of virtuosity, however, is more soothing and easy on the ear than Fahey's. It's far from sappy, though, the rich and resonant picking intimating some underlying restlessness, like peaceful open fields after a storm. Establishing much of the territory Kottke was to explore throughout his career, this release was also one of his most popular, eventually selling over 500,000 copies.

Leo Kottke is an acoustic guitarist. He is known for a fingerpicking style that draws on blues, jazz, and folk music, and for syncopated, polyphonic melodies. He overcame a series of personal obstacles, including partial loss of hearing and a nearly career-ending bout with tendon damage in his right hand, to emerge as a widely recognized master of his instrument. 6- and 12-String Guitar is gis second album, a solo instrumental steel-string acoustic guitar album originally released by John Fahey's Takoma Records in 1969.

Great Britain’s BGO Records found a couple of nearly forgotten gems to compile in this grand two-fer from guitarist Joe Pass’ solo catalog. This set contains his amazing 12 String Guitar album (the first 12 tracks) issued in 1963, with bonus tracks from a 1964 session included. Pass played an acoustic 12-string, of course, and was accompanied by John Pisano on rhythm guitar, bassist Charlie Haden, and drummer Larry Bunker. Each cut is a beautiful modern jazz reading of popular movie themes of the day, from “Lawrence of Arabia” and “How the West Was Won” to the more delicate “Love Theme of Tom Jones” (not the singer) and the taut rhythmic intensity and ultimate beauty of “Carnaval” from the film Black Orpheus, offering listeners solid evidence of his bossa and samba chops. Every track here is a winner…

The completely unique Dodeka guitar was developed by Ermanno Chiavi and Anders Miolin in 2017 Anders Miolin is the only musician in the world who plays it. The 12-string guitar has an extended tuning range and creates a previously unheard, fascinating sound universe. The fusion between artist and instrument creates new and unique programs consisting of rare pearls from the Baroque, Classic, Romantic and Impressionist periods, as well as new works specially composed for the Dodeka guitar."Life is an odyssey. We all carry it literally within us, in our genes and souls, experiencing it throughout our lives. This odyssey starts in Seville, Spain in 1546 and takes us through England and Germany (16th century), Sweden and the Baltics (17th and 18th centuries), Paris (late 19th century) and New York (20th century) to a dreamscape in 2019. My search for sound has also been an odyssey that has led me to extensive research of the repertoire and the development of the 12-string Dodeka guitar. It is a unique instrument built by Ermanno Chiavi.

What do you get when you combine two acoustic guitars? A 12-string guitar, but not the kind that you might be familiar with. This experimental 12-string is a unique instrument by Oliver Codd designed to perform in a virtual domain due to its beautifully simple, yet limited design. All of the strings are tuned to the same note, resulting in a large, rich, ensemble-like sound that, while sonically pleasing, renders it very difficult to play in a live context. Through sampling, all of the lovely tones could be captured and the performance limitations transcended, opening up a whole new world of creative possibilities.
