This 1975 release on Mercury has Randy California and Ed Cassidy's names imprinted boldly on the cover as Spirit, and the 26 songs - starting with "America the Beautiful/The Times They Are a Changin'" and concluding with "The Star Spangled Banner" - are more than just a sly tribute to the bicentennial. They are the most fluid and satisfying statement by the California/Cassidy version of the band, who would be together for another 20 years before California's untimely passing. As ethereal and icy as Feedback, the album Cassidy recorded with the Stahely brothers, there are all sorts of hidden meanings projected throughout this LP. Randy California gives more than a few nods to his work with Jimi Hendrix - covers of "Like a Rolling Stone" and "Hey Joe" are two of Hendrix's more notable and triumphant revisions…

Like his compatriot and close contemporary Abdullah Ibrahim, Hugh Masekela has a 24-carat discography which stretches back six decades and digs deep into the taproot of jazz. Ibrahim is still with us—he has a new album scheduled for June 2019—but Masekela passed in January 2018. Among the several solid Masekela compilations on the market, this 3-CD set is the most welcome. It deals with the most prolific phase of Masekela's career and brings back into circulation material from landmark albums which have either never been reissued or which were last reissued twenty or thirty years ago. Two of the most important albums—Introducing Hedzolleh Soundz (Chisa/Blue Thumb, 1973) and I Am Not Afraid (Chisa/Blue Thumb, 1974)—are included in their entirety. If Masekela '66—'76 did no more than make these titles available again it would justify its existence. But it does much more.

New Haven '76 represents Elvis' summer tour from 23rd July to August 5th 1976. Many Elvis fans consider this to be Elvis' worst Summer tour (apart from abysmal performances in Late August before things 'improved') The Tour coming straight after the three 'bodyguard' sackings finds Elvis on 'auto pilot' and (mostly) singing the absolute minimum of songs in a lacklustre manner…
Chiaroscuro Quartet - Haydn: String Quartets Op. 76 Nos. 1-3 (2020)

Chiaroscuro Quartet - Haydn: String Quartets Op. 76 Nos. 1-3 (2020)

Genre: Classical / Label: BIS

The Chiaroscuro Quartet made their first appearance on BIS with acclaimed recordings of Joseph Haydn’s Sun Quartets, Op. 20, described in The Strad as ‘period-instrument performances of the utmost subtlety and refinement’. The Op. 20 quartets are widely regarded as a milestone in the history of the genre. When Chiaroscuros now return to Haydn, it is with his last complete set of quartets, begun in 1796 when he was 64 years old. The Six String Quartets, Op. 76, form one of the most renowned of Haydn's sets of quartets and carry the stamp of their maker: No other set of eighteenth-century string quartets is so diverse, or so unconcerned with the norms of the time. In the words of Haydn’s friend and contemporary Charles Burney ‘they are full of invention, fire, good taste and new effects’. On the present disc, the first of two, we hear the first three quartets, including the ‘Fifths’ quartet (No. 2) so named after the falling perfect fifths with which it begins. The most famous of the set – and possibly of all Haydn quartets – is No. 3, however: the ‘Emperor’ quartet with its second movement: a set of variations on the ‘Kaiserlied’ which Haydn had recently composed to the greater glory of the Austrian Emperor Franz II.

Anna Vinnitskaya is among an ever-growing number of super-virtuoso pianists to have won a major competition and then followed with a string of acclaimed debut concerts and recordings. Her victory at the 2007 Queen Elizabeth Competition in Brussels placed her in a field where finding elbow room is a daunting challenge; yet her results with critics and public alike have consistently augured continued success. Her spectacular technique and interpretive depth allow her to convincingly perform a range of repertory, from works by J.S. Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven to Rachmaninov, Medtner, and Prokofiev.

Official Release #65. The full saga of Läther (pronounced leather) is tangled enough to give a migraine to all but committed Zappaphiles. Basically, what you need to know is that this project was originally conceived of as a four-record box set. When record company politics prevented its release in that format, much of the material was spread over the albums Live in New York, Sleep Dirt, Studio Tan, and Orchestral Favorites. This three-CD set presents the album as it was originally conceived, with the addition of four bonus tracks at the end. It mixes previously available material, alternate mixes, and edits, and previously unissued stuff, though only the most serious Zappa fans will have a good grip on exactly what has appeared where (the liner notes are surprisingly unexact in this regard).

The String Quartets, Op. 76 are among the most renowned of Joseph Haydn's sets of quartets, and carry the stamp of their maker: No other set of eighteenth-century string quartets is so diverse, or so unconcerned with the norms of the time. In the words of Haydn’s friend and contemporary Charles Burney ‘they are full of invention, fire, good taste and new effects’ – a striking description considering that Haydn had reached the respectable age of 64 when he composed the set.
On the previous volume, the Chiaroscuro Quartet has recorded the first half of Op. 76, including No. 3, the celebrated ‘Emperor’ quartet. The release has won great acclaim, with the critic in Gramophone writing: ‘The Chiaroscuros' account of the remaining three Op. 76 quartets can't come soon enough’. Well, here it is – a set which like its predecessor spans a wealth of moods and atmospheres: from the magical sunrise of the opening of Op. 76 No. 4 to the manic minuet and boisterous finale of Op. 76 No. 6, a movement without a tune worth the name but utterly engrossing even so.The Chiaroscuro Quartet was formed in 2005 by the violinists Alina Ibragimova (Russia) and Pablo Hernán Benedí (Spain), the Swedish violist Emilie Hörnlund and cellist Claire Thirion from France. Performing music of the Classical period on gut strings this highly international ensemble has a unique sound – described in The Observer as ‘a shock to the ears of the best kind’.

Garcia still works wonders on the guitar. His obbligato behind rhythm guitarist Bob Weir's vocal on the gun-fighter ballad, "El Paso," ranged from flamenco figures to blues lines. The latter created a humorous and musically interesting mixture. Slipping around the sunny Mexican-American rhythms were the riffs and diving glissandos of a music that grew up among the chilly winds of Chicago. - Cliff Radel, Enquirer Pop Music Critic. The vocals and instruments blended perfectly into one cohesive unit. The artists themselves seemed to enjoy playing and the concentration they commanded was unshakable in the fan-filled Coliseum. - Douglas Fechter, The NewsRecord Cincy, The Nati, Paris Of America, call it what you will but when the Grateful Dead came to town, they certainly helped propel her to "Queen of the West." The previously unreleased complete show from the Riverfront Coliseum, Cincinnati, OH 10/2/76 is all up from start to finish with xxx 70s-era first set songs like "Promised Land" and "El Paso" to Europe '72 staples and classic covers ("It's All Over Now," "Big River"), wrapped up with a unique second-set jam that opens with "Dancing In The Street" and closes with "Sugar Mag." P.S. As a bonus, we have a quintet of songs from 5/4/77 (recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson), the rest of which was featured on Dave’s Picks Vol. 50 and its Bonus Disc. As we mentioned in 2012 when this series started, we’re determined to provide complete shows whenever possible. And even when a show is only partially included on a release as bonus material, we’re happy to complete it later on down the line, as we’ve done here. We hope you dig it. - David Lemieux
