99 Posse

Magyar Posse was a Finnish instrumental post-rock band formed in 2000 in the city of Pori, Finland. They have released 3 albums. Their debut album We Will Carry You Over the Mountains was released on Verdura Records in 2002, and it got a good reception. The second album Kings of Time on the same label in 2004 gave them more publicity. It went to Top40 album list in Finland and was praised by critics. Magyar Posse released their third album, titled Random Avenger May 17, 2006. Magyar Posse's music is instrumental and usually has a soundtrack-like atmosphere. Their biggest influence is a soundtrack composer Ennio Morricone, although their music reminds more of certain post-rock bands like Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Sigur Ros and Tortoise.

The music on this "M-Base" recording, despite the difference in instrumentation, does not sound radically different than Ornette Coleman's harmelodic music of the 1980s. Altoist Steve Coleman is the lead voice throughout most of his originals and his solo style (often relying heavily on whole-tone runs and unexpected interval jumps) is intriguing, but it would be surprising if his rhythm section did not get bored playing the funky (although eccentric) rhythms after awhile.

The drummer gives the saxophonists some on Coexist, another round of sophisticated truth telling from Winard Harper that demonstrates high standards of musical excellence when it comes to expansive compositions, creative arrangements and choice of able bandmates. Leading ensembles ranging from sextets to tentets, the leader taps guest saxophonists on five of the disc’s 12 tracks. He also shows off his considerable gifts as a trap-set wizard, percussionist and, on his African-tinged “Ummah” and “Jeli Posse,” a player of the balaphone, a vibraphone-type instrument from West Africa.
