A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide)– 2000 Edition is your basic reference and the world's de facto standard for the project management profession. It was designated an American National Standard (ANSI/PMI 99-001-2000) by the American National Standards Institute in March 2001.

In 1987, PMI published the first Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK®) in an attempt to document and standardize generally accepted project management information and practices. The current edition, A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide), Third Edition (2004), is a basic reference for anyone interested in project management. It provides a common lexicon and consistent structure for the field of project management.
The PMBOK Guide is widely accepted to be the standard in project management, although it has its critics.
In addition to the "PMBOK Guide", a must have for all those studying for PMI certification will be Q & As for the PMBOK Guide.

Besides all the criticism, I find this book very useful and a must for every project manager. However, if you are a beginner to the discipline of proejct management, first go through a basic book on project management such as 90 Days to Success as a Project Manager;the only book (for now) that is compatible with this (4th) edition of the PMBOK Guide. I am asking my students to read this book (40 days…) before reading the PMBOK Guide and after reading the PMBOK Guide. It is a well known fact that Standards in any field tend to be dry. Otherwise with the help of other books such as the one mentioned above, it can be a great entry into the discipline of project management.
