The biggest single in M|A|R|R|S' career was the only single in their career, the highly influential "Pump Up The Volume". People had never quite heard of a song full of samples from other songs, even though the collage-style of production was something made famous by Double Dee & Steinski and other DJ's and producers. This disc is the U.S. version on 4th & B'Way/Island with mixes that may be different from the UK disc.

If the past is a foreign country, Miles Kane has a green card for the 1960s, so firmly does his musical vision reside in that time. Where his work with Alex Turner as the Last Shadow Puppets was hailed for its reimagining of Scott Walker-style grandeur, his solo debut sees the decade through a magpie's eye. Jaunty Motown harmonies (Quicksand) are juxtaposed with pulse-raising rock'n'roll riffs (Come Closer) calling to mind everyone from the Stooges to the Supremes. Kane's textures are eclectic, with string sections and slide guitars to bolster his best crooning on the title track, and the breathy vocals of French actress Clmence Posy on the spacious rhythm and blues of Happenstance. Each retro touch is accompanied by the big choruses and key changes of a man who knows his way around a pop song, even if he's not out to break new ground just yet.

During the latter half of the 1980s, a wave of alternative artists began to explore a gentler, more ethereal sound, bringing a dream-like aesthetic to the rock and pop idiom. Taking its lead from the UK (and the 4AD label in particular), this refined approach soon spread, particularly to the United States, slowly picking up the moniker “dream pop” – a catch-all term rather than a genre within itself.
Curated by the same team as our successful ‘Still In A Dream’ 2016 shoegaze set, ‘Cherry Stars Collide’ explores that sound as it emerged in the mid-80s and proceeded to define a less grounded, more thoughtful approach to musical expression than was offered elsewhere. Fusing and blending with other genres along the way. – from the guitar driven shoegaze movement and proto-Britpop to the post ‘C-86’ generation and the nascent leftfield clubbing scene – that sound both drew in artists already operating elsewhere and inspired new artists to embark their own journey.
