A young American soldier (Timothy Bottoms) is wounded by a mortar shell on the last day of World War I. He lies in a hospital bed as a quadruple amputee who has lost his arms, legs, eyes, ears, mouth and nose. He remains conscious and able to think, thereby reliving his life through strange dreams, memories and conversations with Jesus (Donald Sutherland), unable to distinguish whether he is awake or dreaming. He remains frustrated by his situation, until one day when Joe discovers a unique way to communicate with his caregivers…..

George Tatum, a patient in a mental asylum, regularly suffers horrific nightmares linked to a traumatic incident during his childhood. In an effort to modify George’s behaviour and control his psychotic episodes his doctors have used an experimental treatment program.
Outwardly George responds well enough to the treatment to be released back into society, but inwardly George is still tormented by violent flashbacks. A visit to a sleazy sex show is the catalyst for another of George’s episodes, driving him over the edge for good.

The operative word in Drugstore Cowboy is "drug". Matt Dillon plays the leader of a group of dopeheads who wander around the country robbing pharmacies to feed their habits. Dillon's chums include doltish James Le Gros and teen-age junkie Heather Graham; also along for the ride is Dillon's wife Kelly Lynch. Their nemesis is cop James Remar, whom Dillon takes perverse delight in humiliating. When one of the young addicts dies of an overdose, it promps Dillon to try to go straight, a task complicated by wife Lynch's determination to stay high and by the corrupting presence of an ex-priest, played by Naked Lunch author William Burroughs. Drugstore Cowboy was director Gus Van Sant's breakthrough picture.

Alexander Portnoy’s parents are the stereotypical Jewish couple, always complaining and obsessing about their lives and their children. His overbearing mother (Lee Grant) and his perennially constipated father (Jack Somack) provide the comic relief in this intense tale about the young Portnoy who cannot find happiness in his life and relates every detail to his psychiatrist. Alexander picks up a sex-crazed woman (Karen Black) and they quickly become a couple. The problem is, Portnoy works for the city and Monkey as she is called (because she invented a new sex position), cannot even spell. The dichotomy between the characters is overshadowed by their mutual love of sex.
