Blue Note's The Return of Art Pepper: The Complete Art Pepper Aladdin Recordings compiles the 13 final masters that the alto saxophonist recorded for Aladdin between August 1956 and January 1957. These are titled The Return of Art Pepper, since they were recorded shortly after he completed a jail sentence in 1956. As a result, Pepper's chops are a little rusty, but you can hear that he still has a passion for playing, and he does improve over the course of these tracks. For serious Pepper fans, it's worth a listen, but for less dedicated fans, there are better places to become acquainted with his work.

In 1980, Art was 54; his health was poor, but his creativity was at its peak. So was his ambition. He was touring Europe for the first time. He’d brought his own band, his own tunes. He was determined to astound the world.

An expanded version of SV-115 Art Pepper - Surf Ride. The first date finds the alto saxophonist in fine form, leading a quartet consisting of pianist Hampton Hawes, bassist Joe Mondragon, and drummer Larry Bunker. Pepper primarily sticks to originals, though he offers a warm rendition of the standard "These Foolish Things" as well. Pepper sounds a little more adventurous on the second date, accompanied by pianist Russ Freeman, bassist Bob Whitlock, and drummer Bobby White. Two takes of "Chili Pepper" (a Latin-flavored reworking of the venerable "Tea for Two"), two versions of the rapid-fire "Suzy the Poodle" (based upon "[Back Home Again In] Indiana"), a lush arrangement of the ballad "Everything Happens to Me," and a swinging performance of Lester Young's "Tickle Toe" (which incorporates cornetist Bix Beiderbecke's tag from the recording of Paul Whiteman's "When") make up this session.

Producer John Snyder had always wanted to record Pepper and booked him into a week at the Village Vanguard in New York. At the time, Pepper was under contract to Contemporary Records and label head, Les Koenig, decided he would record the gigs, quashing any notion Snyder had of doing the same. However, Art promised Snyder that he’d record an album for Snyder’s label, Artists House, at some point down the road. Together they wound up making four.

“Blues for Blanche” Art usually started his sets with an uptempo blues. In this case, it’s his original about our cat, Blanche (see photo). Art adored this cat. When he was at home, Art generally spent his time fully dressed, on his bed, prone, watching the news, sports (whatever), reading the paper, occasionally rising to sit on the edge of his bed to play the clarinet. When he was lying down, Blanche would join him and sometimes she’d go after the newspaper Art was reading. And he'd encourage her. He’d start waving it, and she’d go nuts, ripping at the paper and at him. Drawing blood! Art loved her passion and murderous beserk-a-tude, and he’d chuckle with delight.
