The third Tyrannosaurus Rex album, and their debut U.S. release, Unicorn was also the first to steadfastly state the game plan which Marc Bolan had been patiently formulating for two years – the overnight transformation from underground icon to above ground superstar…

Firma Melodiya continues the series of compact discs dedicated to December Evenings Festival that takes place at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts. This album, like the previous one, is dedicated to the 1985 festival World of Romanticism and includes recordings featuring Sviatoslav Richter. The atmosphere of December Evenings, an event initiated by the great pianist, differed from usual philharmonic concerts. The spirit of music as an inseparable part of "fusion of arts" the romanticists dreamt of was invisibly felt in each number; a sensitive listener can catch it in these, perhaps technically imperfect, concert recordings from thirty years ago. The works by Schubert, Schumann and Chopin were performed by Sviatoslav Richter in ensemble with his outstanding contemporaries, violinist and David Oistrakh's student Oleg Kogan who passed away prematurely, violist Yuri Bashmet, cellist Natalia Gutman and clarinettist Anatoly Kamyshov.

This is one of the beauties of the Japanese progressive rock. PAGEANT was formed in '81 by guitarplayer Ikkou Nakajima, singer/keyboard player Hiroko Nagai, bass player Nagashima and drummer Hideaki Indou. In '85 they appeared on a Japanese progrock compilation entilted "Progressive Battle" and one year later PAGEANT released their debut-album "La Mosaïque de la Rêverie", a 'classic'. The band was completed by Kazuhiro Miyatake (flute and electric guitar) and Nobuyuki Nagashima (bass) on those records. The second album "Abysmal Masquerade" appeared in '87 and two years followed by the third record entitled "The Pay for a Dreamer's Sin". On this album Hiroko Nagai and Hideaki Indou remained from the original line-up, Kazuhiro Miyatake played flute on two tracks and the band's new guitarplayer became Hiroyuki Maeno.

One of the coolest 70s albums from the great Toots Thielemans – and one of the few that really captures the same sort of soulful magic that Toots hit when working with Quincy Jones! The album's a Dutch production, done with some fantastic arrangements from Rogier Van Otterloo – who creates this gentle groove on some tracks, and lush backdrops on others – shifting Toots through those brilliant modes of color and tone he can do unlike anyone else – as he solos on jazz harmonica, whistles, plays guitar, or even combines some of both! There's great keyboards in the mix on most tracks, too – resonating really nicely with the harmonica – and titles include "Killer Joe", "That Misty Red Beast", "Jane's Theme", "The Shadow Of Your Smile", "Quiet Evenings", "I Won't Last A Day Without You", "The Sensualist", and a remake of "Bluesette".

Immutable once again showcases Meshuggah’s collective brilliance, including some of the most jaw-dropping ensemble performances they have ever executed. Since forming in 1987, the Swedish sound architects known as Meshuggah developed into one of the most technically complex and virtuosic group of players the metal realm has ever encountered, their distinctly unique brand of progressive groove-infused death metal inadvertently launching anentirely new subgenre. Recorded in Sweden’s Sweetspot Studios, their ninth full-length album Immutable is the follow-up to their highly acclaimed and Grammy nominated album, The Violent Sleep Of Reason.

On Brutalism, Jonny Pierce continues the self-reflection and self-healing he began on Abysmal Thoughts, which, thanks to the ways his music grew to accommodate more complicated emotional states, was a breakthrough album for the Drums in more ways than one. As part of the healing process, Pierce collaborated with outside musicians on Brutalism and brought in Chris Coady to mix the album. With a bigger creative team supporting him, Pierce takes inspiration from his longtime affection for synth pop and electronic music, letting the shiny production and instrumentation act as candy-coated armor for his musings on love and lust.

In melodic death metal, it’s easier to sound big than bold. Too often, emerging hopefuls, pretenders to a throne with precious few past occupants, tick off hallmarks rather than using them as base elements with which to do something pioneering. The question, then, is whether Finnish sextet Horizon Ignited are any different. This second album provides a compelling case in their favour, even if it takes a while to make the point.

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Janáček’s birth, this Decca Collector Edition brings together most of the composer’s chamber works and solo pieces plus his most popular orchestral works and the magnificent Glagolitic Mass in a superb digital recording with Riccardo Chailly and Wiener Philharmoniker. The recordings of the solo works and chamber pieces feature one of the world’s most distinguished ensembles: the London Sinfonietta and David Atherton. Their recordings were originally released as a 5-LP set in 1981 and many of these performances have not been available for several years; many also make their first international appearance on CD. This set provides the listener with all the essential non-operatic Janáček in one convenient collection.

One of Armenia’s best bands of the period of jazz fever in the beginning of the 60’s was the quartet formed at the Institute of Languages after Brusov and led by Levon Malkhasyan. The band performed during youth parties in Yerevan, toured around the Soviet Union and participated in All-Union jazz festivals. In Voronezh the band won the Grand Prix, while Levon Malkhasyan was named the best pianist of the festival.
