Africa Is Not a Country

Throughout her life Annie Chikhwaza has retained a heart for the marginalised. First in Holland, then in South Africa, now in Malawi, she has reached out with practical help. When she married a poor African pastor and moved to Malawi, she was horrified by the thousands of orphans on the streets. Today Annie cares for 200 children, some HIV positive, and has built a small town called Kondanani ("Love one another"), with a medical facility, nursery school, primary school, high school and farm. In a country with more than one million orphans Kondanani is an oasis of love. Annie is tough. She has overcome molestation, divorce, carjacking, a broken back, attempted murder, attempted rape, and the death of her beloved husband. Yet she has a vision, and will not be deflected. This is her story.

Lionel Rogosin's religion could be dubbed liberation cinematography he made films as a way to fight injustice. In 1957, Rogosin followed his calling to South Africa creating Come Back, Africa - a powerful and moving drama exposing the harsh reality of life under the system apartheid. Shooting secretly under the very noses of the feared South African police, Rogosin, his crew and his cast (including journalists/activists Lewis Nkosi, Bloke Modisane, and Can Themba) risked arrest and deportation. Miriam Makeba, whose electrifying appearance in Come Back, Africa launched a legendary career, found herself banned from her country after she traveled to Venice for the movie's premiere. The scenes shot in the vibrant black ghetto of Sophiatown are precious images of a lost world. Nkosi later said of the film, It is a monument. We were able to show the world what South Africa really was like.

This tenth edition of the African Economic Outlook finds the continent on the rebound and expects it growth performance in the next years to resume at pre-crisis levels. The focus of the 2010 AEO is Africa's Emerging Economic Partnerships, presenting a comprehensive review of Africa's expanding economic relations with outside the continent that until very recently did not belong to the club of traditional "donors", the OECD Development Assistance Committee.
