The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is the sixth studio album from the English rock band Genesis, released as a double album on 18 November 1974 on Charisma Records. It is their last studio album released with Peter Gabriel as lead singer. It is a concept album about a New York street kid called Rael and his quest for spiritual self-discovery. It was followed by a six-month tour which has been described by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as "a spectacle on par with anything attempted in the world of rock to that point". It is one of two Genesis albums to be included in the top ten of Rolling Stone's "50 Greatest Prog Rock Albums of All Time", who ranked it at number nine and acclaimed it as "one of rock's more elaborate, beguiling and strangely rewarding concept albums". It has also been deemed one of the 23 "Maddest And Most Memorable Concept Albums" by NME for "taking in themes of split personalities, heaven and hell and truth and fantasy".

Given all the overt literary references of Selling England by the Pound, along with their taste for epic suites such as "Supper's Ready," it was only a matter of time before Genesis attempted a full-fledged concept album, and 1974's The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway was a massive rock opera: the winding, wielding story of a Puerto Rican hustler name Rael making his way in New York City. Peter Gabriel made some tentative moves toward developing this story into a movie with William Friedkin but it never took off, perhaps it's just as well; even with the lengthy libretto included with the album, the story never makes sense. But just because the story is rather impenetrable doesn't mean that the album is as well, because it is a forceful, imaginative piece of work that showcases the original Genesis lineup at a peak…

Genesis: The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway Blu-ray features video and reference-quality audio in this exceptional Blu-ray release. The sixth studio album by Genesis, and their last featuring Peter Gabriel. It is a concept album about a young Puerto Rican man named Rael, who goes on a bizarre adventure of self-discovery. Enterprising internet sleuths might have a field day (comedic or otherwise) looking into the history of so-called rock operas, an idiom which most folks would probably say began in earnest with The Who: Tommy , but which at least some nooks and crannies of the world wide web have stuffed with (of course questionable) assertions claiming everyone from Frank Zappa to The Beatles may have beaten The Who to the punch, at least in terms of "concept albums" if not with regard to actual "operatic" formulations. That said, after both Tommy and then Jesus Christ Superstar (the link points to the film since an audio Blu-ray isn't out as of the writing of this review) became hits over the course of the late sixties morphing into the early seventies, suddenly seemingly everyone wanted in on the "rock opera" action. That of course included The Who themselves, who returned in 1973 with Quadrophenia, but there are some who also insist David Bowie: The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars should be included in any "rock opera" list (though others would probably argue this might be more of a "concept album"), which arrived in 1972, the year before Quadrophenia. 1974 had its own rock opera, but in the annals of this particular musical subgenre, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway doesn't seem to be as generally well remembered as some of its "siblings".

Genesis were an English Rock band formed at Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey in 1967. The most commercially successful and longest-lasting line-up consisted of keyboardist Tony Banks, bassist/guitarist Mike Rutherford and drummer/singer Phil Collins. Significant former members were guitarist Steve Hackett and original lead singer Peter Gabriel. The band underwent many changes in musical style over its career, from folk music to progressive rock in the 1970s, before moving towards pop at the end of the decade. They have sold 21.5 million RIAA-certified albums in the United States and their worldwide sales are estimated to be between 100 million and 150 million. All of the group's studio work since signing to Charisma has been remastered and re-released in 2007 as SACD, except their debut album (due the copyright issue).
