This remarkable concert at the Paris Olympia in March 1960 features the same group(less Cannonball Adderley) that recorded 'Freddie Freeloader' on Miles Davis's classic album 'Kind of Blue' a year or so earlier but they sound very different here. John Coltrane was reluctant to be part of this European tour and was anxious to leave Miles and start his own band. Despite this he's in absolutely blistering form although some members of the audience are clearly perturbed by the intensity of his playing. The recording quality is excellent and it's a mystery why this concert hasn't received more attention.

Jaco Pastorius had been in the bass slot just a few months but harnessing his great potential had already led to the replacement of drummer Chester Thompson with Alex Acuna (who had been playing percussion) and the introduction of Manolo Badrena (joining in the vacant percussion slot). As Joe Zawinul recalled: "As great a drummer as Chester was, he and Jaco didn't flow. Jaco was more of an upbeat player - more driving…… We had Alex Acuna move over to the drums and then Badrena came in. All of a sudden we had some smokin' stuff again.

I grew up in Newark, New Jersey where such great artists as James Moody, Sarah Vaughan, Walter Davis Jr., Hank Mobley were my neighbors and Wayne Shorter was my dear friend. Wayne and I went to grammar school and Arts High School together. I was very influenced by Wayne in every way and knew at young age that he was a genius. But I could not tolerate the cold winters, so I decided to move to Los Angeles.
