John McCabe was almost a legend in his own lifetime, acknowledged as one of the foremost British composers of our time and also as a brilliant pianist who championed the work of many contemporary composers. Following his recent death, 19 composers wrote pieces in tribute for an ensemble of clarinet, recorder, viola and piano (and variations of the mix) which are now collected into this album which is lovingly dedicated to Johns memory and also to his widow Monica, who was a tireless support and who now works to promote his musical legacy and we are grateful for her contributions to this project.

Recorded at McCabe's in Santa Monica, CA, on August 18th, 1973, Cosmic Partners - The McCabe's Tapes is a rare and previously unreleased concert recording featuring Nesmith and a small coterie of fellow musicians, including long time recording partner and pedal steel player Red Rhodes. This recording is from a mini concert tour that was in support of what was to be Nesmith's final record on the RCA label, Pretty Much Your Standard Ranch Stash. The dates would reunite him with the remnant players from Nesmith's Countryside label, under Elektra. Consisting of a rhythm section featuring Danny Lane on drums and Colin Cameron on bass, and the legendary O.J. "Red" Rhodes on pedal steel, this would be the last performance of it's kind and the beginning of an almost Homeric journey for Nesmith.

This compendium of British Piano Sonatas has been dictated by quality and variety. There are obvious omissions, largely of composers who wrote fine music for the piano, but maybe not in the form or structure suggested by the loaded word ‘sonata’. All the works presented here show their composers’ thinking over a bigger scale than their smaller pieces might allow, so that the listener is able to indulge in the creator’s sound world and control of musical form over longer periods. Here are a dozen such works each totally representative of their composers. We can delight in the stylistic and sonic contrasts as well as revelling in their varieties of keyboard writing. John McCabe (1939-2015) was renowned as both a pianist (a Haydn specialist and supporter of many contemporary composers) and as a composer of very fine music in several genres. In 1985 he visited EMI Studios in Sydney Australia to make this album of music by Australian and American composers. However for several reasons it was put to one side and when the studio closed it was believed that all copies were lost. Last year a cassette copy was found, transferred and remastered. It is a wonderful collection of works, performed with McCabes usual dazzling virtuosity and deep musicality. The album comprises works of differing styles best summarized as post-modernist individual, inspired, contemporary but not unfriendly to audiences; some are impressionist such as the title track by Peter Sculthorpe; jazz-inspired (Rochbergs Carnival Music) and all are fine additions to McCabes recorded legacy.

As an assistant professor of harmony, she trained many students, including one who became very famous and later dedicated her a score: “To Fernande Decruck, with all the gratitude and fond memories of the author – Olivier Messiaen”.
