The Owsley Stanley Foundation, in partnership with the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael, CA, is pleased to announce the sixth release from Owsley’s storied archive of live concert recordings – Bear’s Sonic Journals: That Which Colors the Mind, a previously unreleased 1970 live concert featuring one of the greatest masters of Indian classical music, Ali Akbar Khan (sarod), accompanied by Indranil Bhattacharya (sitar) and Zakir Hussain (tabla).

The single most intimate look at Muhammad Ali’s life after boxing, told through the story of an unexpected friendship.

American-based concert violinist (and former Metropolitan Opera concertmaster) Elmira Darvarova teams up for this album with the world-renowned masters of the Indian instrument Sarod - brothers Amaan Ali Khan and Ayaan Ali Khan (sons and disciples of the legendary Amjad Ali Khan) who represent the seventh generation of a musical lineage known as the Senia Bangash School. The artists come together in the spirit of sharing the great unique treasures of their own artistic traditions, as well as finding common ground in Ragas and Medieval modes.

Sayeh-Roshan (“chiaroscuro” in Persian), a recording that features contemporary compositions reflecting on how layered identities, such as Persian-Canadian, can enrich one’s perspective. Chiaroscuro, the interaction of light and shadow, is interpreted here as the interplay between competing ideas and perspectives, and between tradition and modernity. New works by Amir Eslami, Reza Vali, and Parisa Sabet are interwoven with traditional Iranian pieces for kamancheh and tombak, featuring guest musicians Behnoosh Behnamnia and Bamdad Fotouhi.
