A lot of guitarists come in and out of LA for gig. One of the few guys I’ll make a point to see no matter what is Russell Malone. As the title of this latest album with Rick Germanson/p, Luke Sellick/b and Willie Jones III/dr states, Malone’s all about melody (as well as swing), even in the most adventurous of solos. Here, the songs are fairly concise, with a slinky bop take of Freddie Hubbard’s “One The Real Side” and a nimble “Jive Hoot” pulsating like a V8 engine. His art of using space is like Monet on “Haunted Heart” and the delicate “Message to Jim Hall.” Jones supplies velvet brushes on the cozy read of the soul hit “Saving All My Love For You” while he does a nice groove with Sellick on the hip “Nice Lady”. Malone does a couple solo arias as well, making silence a sound on “When A Man Loves A Woman” and being as delicate as handling a newborn on “He’s Gone Away”. You could take years studying this session, and keep learning things.

Deepest View (Archive Volume 3) (2011). Following closely in the footsteps of their first two archival releases, Space Debris return with a third volume of live recordings and bits and pieces. Starting off in an unusually subdued mood, with moody acoustic piano, the 10-minute opening cut Mary-Joe-Anna nonetheless gets going eventually into another heavy jam from the band. The shorter Reprise of the Sun features some nice electric piano. Off course, throughout is the sterling organ work that is something of a signature sound for Space Debris, provided on some tracks by current keyboardist Winnie Rimbach-Sator and on others by former keyboardist Tom Kunkel. But let’s not forget the tight rhythm section of Peter Brettel (bass) and Christian Jäger (drums) and the endlessly creative guitar playing of Tommy Gorny…

Canadlan alto saxophonist François Carrier and drummer Michel Lambert went to Russia four times over the last six years to play their melodic abstract music with St. Petersburg-based pianist Alexey Lapin. They released their first Trilogy in 2012 then in 2014 FMR Records published The Russian Concerts Vol. 1 & Vol. 2) which were widely acclaimed.

There's underground, and then there's the small-scale independent releases compiled on Personal Space: Electronic Soul 1974-1984. If rhythm box and/or synthesizer-armed cult artists such as Timmy Thomas, Shuggie Otis, and Mandré were just under the surface, much of this was dislodged from beneath the earth's crust. Disco freaks will recognize the name of Boris Midney, who wrote and released Makers' breathy and squelchy "Don't Challenge Me." Radio DJ Lynn Tolliver, member of the Broadcasters Hall of Fame, was behind Sexual Harassment's early-'80s electro-sleaze; he's present with the New Year's "My Bleeding Wound," a howling, lewd, reverb-soaked blues number. Deborah Washington, who performed with Cincinnati bluesman husband Albert Washington, appears with "Shortest Lady" – synth funk so distant and lo-fi that it probably wasn't intentional to have her sound like she'd need to grow four feet taller to be near the microphone.

Berlin-based Swedish tenor saxophonist Otis Sandsjö returns with his third album Y-OTIS TRE on We Jazz Records, February 23.
