Alyn Cosker

Alyn Cosker has quickly established a reputation as a formidable jazz drummer and is an exciting new talent in the vibrant Scottish jazz scene. Alyn has poured his experience and chameleon-like taste into the original compositions on Lyn's Une, his debut album, and jazz, rock, funk, latin and celtic styles are all in evidence. He is the winner of Scottish Jazz Awards 2009 (Best Drummer).

This project - a tribute to an obscure Glaswegian indie band by an equally obscure Edinburgh jazz musician - is an oddly satisfying exercise in wilful Caledonian obscurity. The Pearlfishers, led by David Scott of the BMX Bandits, have been recording dreamy, elegant, adult-oriented pop since the early 90s, pitched somewhere between Brian Wilson, Steely Dan and Prefab Sprout.

"Sweet Sister Sweet", commissioned by Tommy Smith in 1995, was written by the late trumpeter/composer Kenny Wheeler over a two-year period and completed in 1997. It was premiered in performance by the SNJO in 1998 and it remains a wonderful example of his signature style. This performance features trumpeter Laura Jurd and vocalist Irini Arabatzi.

Tommy Smith wrote the epic suite Beauty and the Beast specifically for the American saxophonist and ex Miles-Davis sideman Bill Evans, and this recording with the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra fully captures the power, passion and majesty of breath-taking orchestral jazz.

The acclaimed trumpeter has been inspired by the quirky, romantic, disillusioned and joyful tunes written by one of the greatest songwriters of the past 50 years, Joni Mitchell. Steele’s approach is to savour the simplicity; not stray too far from the melody; look for beauty; and create tunes that glow and sparkle with warmth and affection.
