For many their first encounter with classical music will be through its use in films and this collection makes a fantastic entry point to this rich and diverse world. Helpfully all tracks list the films alongside the music, so there will be no doubt as to where the music is familiar from. Classical music has been used to memorable effect in films many times from Ride of the Valkyries in Apocalypse Now to Barber s Adagio in Platoon and from Also sprach Zarathustra in 2001: A Space Odyssey to Beethoven s Ninth in A Clockwork Orange. Occasionally, as in the case of Mozart s Piano Concerto No.21 used in Elvira Madigan, the film title has provided a lasting nickname for the music. All these favourites are included here.

Postcards from Vienna: drawn largely from the supreme players of the Wiener Philharmoniker, collected here are the Decca recordings of Viennese chamber music ensembles, including the New Vienna Octet, Vienna Wind Soloists, Wiener Waldhornverein and Vienna Flute Trio, many making their first international appearance on CD. Led by clarinetist Alfred Boskovsky, the first line-up of the Vienna Octet made it's last recording for Decca in 1972, but Boskovsky was behind the revival of the group's name, having already chosen the young members of the Vienna Philharmonic who would carry on the work of the ensemble and it's traditions of superbly mellifluous, silver-toned playing.

Amadinda Percussion Group - 4'33" (The Music of Varèse, Chávez, Cage & Harrison) (1993)
Classical | EAC (APE, CUE & NO LOG) | 158 MB

Without a doubt this is the most splendid recording of 4'33" available to date. The Amadinda Percussion Group brings a sensitivity & brio to the piece that have rarely been approached. The tempo is a bit faster than usual but this is a welcome change that resonates closer to Cage's intention. The sound quality is first-rate: every nuance is finely chiselled to perfection while the dynamics are tracked with absolute fidelity.
