Aniko Villalba

Una tragedia si abbatte sulla vita di Seberuj, cacciatore e allevatore di renne dell'antico clan Nogo, che vive insieme alla famiglia in un accampamento, tra le nevi e i ghiacci quasi perenni della Siberia. La moglie e la figlioletta sono aggredite e sbranate da un lupo solitario che semina il terrore tra le mandrie dell'intero circondario e a cui gli uomini da mesi danno invano la caccia. Dopo aver recuperato i loro corpi martoriati e aver adempiuto a tutti i riti funebri, l'anziano Seberuj si ritrova a vivere da solo, accudito di tanto in tanto dai vicini. Da una decina d'anni, infatti, la figlia maggiore, Aniko, ha abbandonato la sua tribù per trasferirsi a studiare in città. Il suo sogno è diventare geologa.
