"Queen of Soul: The Atlantic Recordings" is an 87-track, four-disc box set that covers Aretha Franklin's Atlantic career, spanning from 1967's "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)" to 1976's "Something He Can Feel". Over the course of the set, all of Aretha's best-known songs, including all of her Top Ten pop and R&B singles, are included. For fans who only know the singles, the set is primarily notable for the wealth of album tracks and forgotten singles that are included, which nearly equal the hits in terms of quality. Stopping just short of her move to disco, "The Queen of Soul" just misses being a totally comprehensive collection, but it remains definitive – it may miss some of her later hits, but every one of her greatest tracks is in the box. The Queen of Soul is one the cornerstones of any soul collection.

Aretha Franklin has simply been one of the greatest singers of the modern generation, and whether bringing her powerful, passionate voice to bear on gospel standards, songs from the Great American Songbook, jazz standards, pop ditties, or deep Southern soul and R&B, she has always had the presence – much like Ray Charles – to make anything she touches unmistakably hers.

Aretha Franklin was one of the giants of soul music, and indeed of American pop as a whole. More than any other performer, she epitomized soul at its most gospel-charged. Her astonishing run of late-'60s hits with Atlantic Records – "Respect," "I Never Loved a Man," "Chain of Fools," "Baby I Love You," "I Say a Little Prayer," "Think," "The House That Jack Built," and many others – earned her the title Queen of Soul.

30 Greatest Hits zeroes in on Aretha Franklin's prime recording period for Atlantic, from her breakout in 1967 with 'I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)' through the end of 1974, during which the Queen of Soul truly reigned over the charts she averaged over one pop hit every two months. This two-disc set delivers all of her classics ('Respect,' 'Do Right Woman, Do Right Man,' '(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,' 'Chain of Fools,' 'Think,' 'Spanish Harlem,' 'Rock Steady'), plus much more excellent material for those who won't recognize much more than the songs (and there are quite a few) that have entered the cultural consciousness ('I Say a Little Prayer,' 'The Weight,' 'Spirit in the Dark,' 'Day Dreaming'). It's a great foundation to any collection that has yet to be equaled by a pair of Rhino sets, the two-volume Very Best of Aretha Franklin from 1994 and Aretha's Best from 2001.

Review by Andy Kellman For those neither willing nor able to take the plunge, Time Life's 11-disc Sweet Soul of the ‘70s box was broken down into six volumes. Sweet Soul of the '70s: Stone in Love with You is one of the five two-disc volumes (to go with one single-disc set), and it emphasizes hits from the earlier half of the decade. It’s not particularly broad, containing five songs from Aretha Franklin, three each from George Benson, the Stylistics, and Spinners, and two from some others, but no selection is debatable. Among the highlights: Isaac Hayes' “Theme from Shaft,” Sylvia’s “Pillow Talk,” the Blackbyrds' “Walking in Rhythm,” the Staple Singers' “I’ll Take You There,” and Timmy Thomas' “Why Can’t We Live Together.”
