In his brief liner essay introducing this amazing 21-disc retrospective, ECM founder Manfred Eicher states that he wanted to work with the Art Ensemble of Chicago after hearing late-'60s recordings by its members and witnessing their legendary performances in Paris during the era – which resulted in 15 recordings for various labels. Eicher didn't get his chance for nearly a decade, but the relationship between label, band, and colleagues continues. The release of this mammoth retrospective finds the label and the musicians celebrating precursors to their respective 50th anniversaries. The AEC, an outgrowth of the South Side's Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians have always been great architects of space (check the AEC's own collective debut, People in Sorrow). They took on the intense challenges put forth by Coltrane, Coleman and Taylor and used sound itself as a means to, and process of, investigation. ECM's has also been ready to engage space whenever possible: Their motto is "the Most Beautiful Sound Next to Silence."

Originally comprised of saxophonists Roscoe Mitchell and Joseph Jarman, trumpeter Lester Bowie, bassist Malachi Favors, and later, drummer Famoudou Don Moye, the Art Ensemble of Chicago enjoyed a critical reputation as the finest and most influential avant-garde jazz ensemble of the 1970s and '80s. Whether or not that reputation was wholly deserved is, in retrospect, subject to debate the World Saxophone Quartet and the Cecil Taylor Unit may well have been more influential.

Originally recorded in 1970 as the soundtrack to French new wave film "Les Stances A Sophie", this LP contains Art Ensemble's most accessible (and probably best) track ever, the awesome "Theme De Yo Yo". While the rest of the LP is free and experimental, "Theme De Yo Yo" is tighter and funkier with a superb vocal from Fontella Bass.

Alone among the first eight albums of the ECM Rarum series, the Art Ensemble of Chicago edition is a group effort, with surviving members Roscoe Mitchell, Malachi Favors, and Don Moye offering only a brief greeting in the booklet. There were only four Art Ensemble of Chicago albums over only a half-dozen years (1978-1984), so listeners get two tracks from the initial offering, "Nice Guys" and "Full Force," and one apiece from Urban Bushmen and The Third Decade.

We are on the Edge: A 50th Anniversary Celebration is a commemoration of a half-century of magical music making from The Art Ensemble of Chicago, a band that has been at the forefront of creative improvised music since forming in 1969. It has also long served as the flagship ensemble of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), the august Chicago-based organization that also fostered the careers of members such as Muhal Richard Abrams, Anthony Braxton, Henry Threadgill, and Wadada Leo Smith, among many others. Now led by the surviving members Roscoe Mitchell and drummer Famoudou Don Moye, the album is also a loving tribute to the band’s three original members who have passed: Lester Bowie, Malachi Favors, and most recently, Joseph Jarman.

The Art Ensemble of Chicago with Fontella Bass was recorded in a Paris studio in 1970. The band had been gigging regularly in the city and this session offered an intimate view of the live material including 'How Strange' which appeared later on Live in Paris. 'How Strange' is part of a suite with 'Ole Jed,' comprising nearly 22 minutes. Bass, an R&B and gospel singer by trade and Lester Bowie's wife at the time, adds a wonderful theatrical and sonic dimension to the Art Ensemble's creative juggernaut. 'How Strange' begins with an African chant by Joseph Jarman and Bass. As the instruments enter in earnest, one can hear traces of 'Round Midnight' waft through the background and then the musical reality play is off an running…

During the late '60s and early '70s, the Art Ensemble helped pioneer the fusion of jazz with European art music and indigenous African folk styles. They also combined music from sanctified church services, minstrel shows, and bawdy houses of late 19th and early 20th century America - with a modernist spirit and lively stage show that involved face paint and costumes as well as hundreds of musical instruments…
