VINDICATOR is the debut solo album by Arthur Lee, formerly of the legendary ‘60s band LOVE. Released in 1972 by A&M, the LP features a muscular set of guitar-fueled hard rock laced with blues. The influence of Lee’s friend Jimi Hendrix is prevalent throughout the record. Included here is the superb soul spin “Everybody’s Gotta Live”.

Love is in the air on a 22-track compilation from Arthur Lee's Legendary Band! The oft-overused word groundbreaking could in fact have been coined to describe the brief and brilliant career arc of Love, the pioneering psychedelic folk-rock group that was the brainchild of singer-songwriter and formidable frontman Arthur Lee. They are one of the first fully integrated acts in popular music - the visionary Lee is an African-American from Memphis, TN, who migrated west before finding fame. It's also a fact that Love was the first rock band signed to Jac Holzman's now-legendary 1960s Elektra roster, where they were instrumental in helping The Doors get started. Love's genius 1967 LP Forever Changes is considered one of the best pop albums ever made, and undoubtedly vies for most inclusions on the all-time Top 10 lists of music critics everywhere. Love made four albums from 1966-69 (including that masterwork), and it's from this quintessential quartet of recordings - plus two non-LP singles from the era - that THE BEST OF LOVE draws its incandescent repertoire.

Love broadened their scope into psychedelia on their sophomore effort, Arthur Lee's achingly melodic songwriting gifts reaching full flower. The six songs that comprised the first side of this album when it was first issued are a truly classic body of work, highlighted by the atomic blast of pre-punk rock "Seven & Seven Is" (their only hit single), the manic jazz tempos of "Stephanie Knows Who", and the enchanting "She Comes in Colors", perhaps Lee's best composition (and reportedly the inspiration for the Rolling Stones' "She's a Rainbow"). It's only half a great album, though; the seventh and final track, "Revelation", is a tedious 19-minute jam that keeps Da Capo from attaining truly classic status.

Arthur has been a popular mainstay of the blues scene in L.A. for many years. His first album, It's Private Tonight, released in 1972 firmly established the silky smooth vocal presence and guitar style that he's recognized for today. Arthur has recorded with Jimmy Smith, Nina Simone, Quincy Jones, Lowell Fulson, The Crusaders and Bonnie Raitt. In 1991, Arthur played rhythm guitar and contributed two songs to B.B. King's album There Is Always One More Time. King later returned the favor, appearing on Arthur's release Back On Track in 1999. Stomp The Floor features his signature brand of soulful rhythm & blues filled with melodic hooks, classy arrangements and impeccable song writing.

Singer-guitarist John Lee Hooker was one of the most successful blues artists of the second half of the 20th century, yet his hypnotic brand of blues was in many ways a throwback to earlier times, before rules of rhyme, meter, and chord structure became standardized. The Clarksdale, Mississippi-born musician burst on the national scene with his first record, "Boogie Chillen," which topped Billboard's Most-Played Juke Box Race Record chart in 1949. His unaccompanied performance, delivered in a declarative baritone over an unchanging one-chord guitar pattern and the steady stomp of his foot on a wooden board, was not only a bold announcement of youthful independence but marked the arrival of a unique musical stylist.

The always eclectic Maria Muldaur, whose previous albums have paid tribute to Shirley Temple and blues women of the '20s, takes another musical detour in this collection of songs associated with Peggy Lee. In addition to her cool, sexy, relaxed voice, Lee was arguably more talented than other vocalists from her era. As a songwriter she co-penned some of her own material, including the swinging "I'm Gonna Go Fishin'" with Duke Ellington, which features the witty double entendres that spice several other songs. Muldaur possesses a similar ability to purr ("Some Cats Know") or sizzle (an opening tour de force of "Fever" and "Black Coffee") without breaking a sweat. So this collection of 12 tracks, backed by a talented yet restrained eight-piece band, is a natural extension of her vocal strengths. The stylish, retro arrangements include vibes and big-band-styled horn charts that sound as authentic as if they were recorded in the '30s. Even though there are some finger-popping swing numbers (a zippy duet with Dan Hicks on Ted Shapiro's "Winter Weather" is especially peppy), a late-night, languid blues-jazz vibe dominates.
