Artists in Their Studios

Imagine a beautiful castle with enormous spires, an underground super villain’s lair, or dark and grimy factory filled with ludicrous machinery. How do you take an idea for an environment and turn it into a drawing? This workshop will give the beginning designer the foundation needed to design environments and backgrounds.

In the early 1980s, a particular alchemy between new musical technologies and significant social, cultural, and political transformations in Ghana gave rise to a new style of highlife. Drum machines and synthesisers appeared alongside lilting guitar lines and punchy horns, and the emerging Ghanaian diaspora began incorporating US disco and boogie, R&B, European new wave, and Caribbean zouk and soca into their music.

Both Mississippi Joe Callicott and Furry Lewis' Blues careers began in the '20s but both were overshadowed by the bigger Blues artists in their later years. Iris Portugaly is a vocalist, drummer, composer and performer and the academic director of the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music.Ofer Portugaly is a pianist, musical director, composer and arranger and a senior faculty member at the Rimon School. Iris and Ofer Portugaly met in 1987, on the steps of the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. During their stay there, they formed a jazz quartet with two more Bostonian musicians, and started performing in Boston jazz clubs. The couple has performed over the years, with their quartet, in countless concerts and festivals in Israel and abroad, and collaborated with Israeli and international jazz artists.
