An excellent budget compilation of the wonderful Bethlehem Records label - what a roster of artists they had. Very good sound too. The Bethlehem label focused on jazz releases, and this set collects some great examples of jazz–vocally and instrumentally–between the years 1958-62. One look at the artists on this 60 track 2 CD set shows how many fine artists released music on the label. Like other collections from One Day Music, there's no booklet, only a short paragraph about the label and a few of the featured artists. The digitally remastered sound is good overall within the limits of recording styles of the era.

Trumpet-organ-guitar-drums quartets are not too common, but after hearing this excellent CD, one wonders why. Kevin Dean is a superior hard bop trumpeter with an appealing sound and a melodic and swinging style. Organist Hank Marr has built his approach out of that of Jimmy Smith, guitarist Greg Clayton is excellent whether soloing or playing rhythm, and drummer Jim Rupp is solid in support. The musicians groove together quite well on a variety of standards. The result is an infectious and swinging set. ~ Scott Yanow

Sean Costello was one of the most brilliant blues-based artists of his generation. His deeply soulful singing, songwriting and guitar playing crossed effortlessly between genres. Sean entered the scene as a child prodigy, and soon became regarded as a torchbearer, one of the leading lights of the new century. He had already gained international recognition when he died tragically in 2008, on the eve of his 29th birthday. IN THE MAGIC SHOP is Sean Costello’s previously unreleased 2005 studio album, produced in New York City by his longtime friend, collaborator and advocate, four-time Grammy Award winner Steve Rosenthal, in his recording studio, The Magic Shop. This is Sean Costello at his best, performing his stunning original compositions and well-chosen covers with band mates Paul Linden, Melvin Zachery and Ray Hangen, along with a few guests. This should have been Sean’s breakthrough record — but it remained unmixed and unheard for almost ten years.

Mr. Counterpoint. This album took its title from a club in West Orange, N.J., called Counterpoint. The club was owned by pianist John Gamba, making him one of the few jazz musicians to become a club owner. A skilled technician, the pianist managed to infuse his performances with a good deal of unexpected fire. Indeed, there were moments on “Words,” “Yesterdays,” and “Leaves” that sharply suggested the legendary Eddie Costa. Gamba had the strong percussive approach to his instrument that was a hallmark of Costa and displayed a similar concept of time.

The first ever reissue of the 1975 free jazz album originally released on India Navigation.
What we know of Downtown New York comes from the countercultural and creative flowering that emerged in lower Manhattan in the 1960s, attributable to cheap live-work spaces called lofts. These were often abandoned and disused small manufacturing spaces and they became a nexus for artistic practice and life. From a jazz perspective, lofts were alternatives to the club scene, and they gained notoriety in the 1970s.

These 14 tracks, cut in 1996 when Lockwood was 81 years old, are among the most accessible music that he has ever laid down. Had this record – with its mix of spare, raw solos and duets juxtaposed with full band pieces that thunder quietly or roar loud and clear – come out in the late '60s, it might have been as big and important a record as anything cut by Muddy Waters (maybe more, since Waters didn't get to make albums as strong and straightforward as this until the 1970s)……

Femmes de Légende features and celebrates the work of female composers. As a female artist myself, I feel it my duty to promote the work of talented, but often overlooked, women. These beautifully crafted, intelligent and diverse works deserve more attention. They are not the work of females who compose but the creations of great composers who are female. The programme begins with the sweet and delightful Thème varié by the French composer Cécile Chaminade (1857 – 1944). This charming piece vividly demonstrates Chaminade’s understanding of effective writing for the piano. Clara Schumann’s (1819 – 1896) Variations on a theme by Robert Schumann, is a skilful manipulation of the fourth of her husband’s Op. 99, Bunte Blätter. It combines gentleness and power and achieves a solemnity and soul-reaching quality. The Variations were written as a 43rd birthday present for her husband in 1853, the year before his attempted suicide which forced him into an asylum and Clara to neglect composing for domestic duties.
