Review: This compilation is like a class reunion: you can remember the most formative figures of your year right away, but there were also people who stayed more in the background, but whose presence you also enjoyed at the time. And so there are also a few pearls here that will put a smile on your face when you listen to them and inevitably lead to an "Oh yes!". Or who immediately thinks of names like 16Bit, Animotion, Cameo, The Greg Kihn Band or Moti Special when it comes to the typical 80s? And the fact that the whole thing is presented in maxi format is an additional plus.
However, I also expect really rare maxies from a sampler that calls itself "Rare Maxi Classics". In my opinion, some titles have no place in this track listing, hence only four stars.
CONCLUSION: The DCD is like a surprise egg: the whole thing tastes great, it's fun to be surprised and the toy is also good. Have fun listening!

Bassist George Mraz nicely balances his roles as featured instrumentalist and trio member in this strong group performance from 1995. He is unquestionably a compelling soloist, as is made clear in his extended bowing features on "Passion Flower" and "Haunted Heart," and on the brilliant duet with drummer Billy Hart on Thelonious Monk's "Ask Me Now." Satisfying as these pieces are, though, the best part of this CD is the calmly insistent pulse generated by the trio overall. Mraz, Hart, and pianist Richie Beirach form a superb group that is a direct descendant of the inspired edition of pianist Bill Evans' trio that had Scott LaFaro on bass (1959 to 1961).

Avril Ramona Lavigne (/ˌævrɪl ləˈviːn/ AV-ril lə-VEEN; born September 27, 1984) is a Canadian singer and songwriter. She has released six studio albums and received eight Grammy Award nominations.
At age 16, Lavigne signed a two-album recording contract with Arista Records. Her debut studio album, Let Go (2002), is the best-selling album of the 21st century by a Canadian artist. It yielded the singles "Complicated" and "Sk8er Boi", which emphasized a skate punk persona and earned her the title "Pop Punk Queen" from music publications. She is considered a key musician in the development of pop punk music, since she paved the way for female-driven, punk-influenced pop music in the early 2000s. Her second studio album, Under My Skin (2004), became Lavigne's first album to reach the top of the Billboard 200 chart in the United States, going on to sell 10 million copies worldwide.

At first listen, The Practice of Love, Jenny Hval’s seventh full-length album, unspools with an almost deceptive ease. Across eight tracks, filled with arpeggiated synth washes and the kind of lilting beats that might have drifted, loose and unmoored, from some forgotten mid-’90s trance single, The Practice of Love feels, first and foremost, compellingly humane. Given the horror and viscera of her previous album, 2016’s Blood Bitch, The Practice of Love is almost subversive in its gentleness—a deep dive into what it means to grow older, to question one’s relationship to the earth and one’s self, and to hold a magnifying glass over the notion of what intimacy can mean. As Hval describes it, the album charts its own particular geography, a landscape in which multiple voices engage and disperse, and the question of connectedness—or lack thereof—hangs suspended in the architecture of every song. It is an album about “seeing things from above—almost like looking straight down into the ground, all of these vibrant forest landscapes, the type of nature where you might find a porn magazine at a certain place in the woods and everyone would know where it was, but even that would just become rotting paper, eventually melting into the ground.”

Throughout Figments, pianist Bill Anschell?s creative, abstract approach takes each song to unexpected places without ever leaving his audience behind. Self-recorded over a series of late nights, after gigs, when Anschell?s "internal supervisor had clocked out." The result is twelve genre-bending, near stream-of-consciousness takes covering a mix of jazz standards and pop songs from the 60s and 70s. Highlights include Arlo Guthrie?s protest song "Alice?s Restaurant," a meditative take on the Rodgers and Hart standard "It Never Entered My Mind," and a prepared-piano version of Joni Mitchell?s "Big Yellow Taxi."
