A rich account of the impact of the Second World War on the lives of people living in the farms and villages of Britain. On the outbreak of war, the countryside was invaded by service personnel and evacuee children by the thousand; land was taken arbitrarily for airfields, training grounds and firing ranges, and whole communities were evicted.

Born on 15 April 1924 in Lincoln, Sir Neville Marriner studied at the Royal College of Music and the Paris Conservatoire. He began his career as a violinist, playing first in a string quartet and trio, then in the London Symphony Orchestra. It was during this period that he founded the Academy, with the aim of forming a top-class chamber ensemble from London’s finest players. Beginning as a group of friends who gathered to rehearse in Sir Neville’s front room, the Academy gave its first performance in its namesake church in 1959. The Academy now enjoys one of the largest discographies of any chamber orchestra worldwide, and its partnership with Sir Neville Marriner is the most recorded of any orchestra and conductor.

From the Russian Revolution to America's declaration of war and the lasting horror of Passchendaele, this unique collection of historic recordings contains the voices of those who were there. Among the memorable voices in this compilation are Commander William Ibbett, who experienced the aftermath of the Bolshevik Revolution at close quarters; Sir Edward Spears on the mutiny in the French army; and Royal Flying Corps pilots, whose life expectancy could be a low as a single day.

Sail Cowabunga!: A Family's 10 Years at Sea by Janis Couvreux
English | October 14th, 2017 | ISBN: 1946802042 | 276 pages | EPUB | 11.31 MB

From Bordeaux, France to San Francisco, California, this book follows a Franco-American couple and their two young sons across the Atlantic Ocean and into a ten-year journey at sea. Through their adventures and misadventures, tragedies, and glories across four continents, the Couvreux family rarely had a dull moment living on the water. Janis chronicles in vivid and lively detail how they fended off a midnight intruder, sailed to the microscopic St. Peter and St. Paul rocks on the equator, explored the jungles of French Guiana and Devil's Island, and sailed through Cuba in the turmoil of the late 80s.

Historian Dr Janina Ramirez unlocks the secrets of a centuries-old masterpiece in glass. At 78 feet in height, the famous East Window at York Minster is the largest medieval stained-glass window in the country and it was the creative vision of a single artist, a mysterious master craftsman called John Thornton, one of the earliest named English artists. The East Window has been called England's Sistine Chapel. Within its 311 stained-glass panels is the entire history of the world, from the first day to the Last Judgment, and yet it was made 100 years before Michelangelo's own masterpiece.
