The juxtaposition of old and new which lies at the heart of much Christmas music lends this recording by the mixed-voice Choir of The Queen’s College Oxford its theme. The repertoire ranges in period from Hildegard of Bingen to pieces composed during the last few years. The central work – Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols – vividly encapsulates the intersection of ancient and modern, setting medieval and Renaissance texts, and drawing on plainchant as musical inspiration, while – in its series of fresh, vivid, and sharply-etched miniatures – eschewing the sentimentality which had become attached to Christmas and its music.

While watching this 21-song concert by Ian Hunter & His Rant Band, one is struck by the DVD's great sound – superb clarity on "I Wish I Was Your Mother," "Knees of My Heart," and the other 19 tunes (the British label Snapper wisely deciding to release the audio on a separate disc entitled The Truth, the Whole Truth, and Nuthin' But the Truth for those who prefer CD). "23A Swan Hill" rocks harder than its appearance on another recent DVD, Strings Attached, and is classic Mott the Hoople-style angst rock accompanied by great backing vocals, long camera shots, and colorful close-ups on the DVD. The Rant Band are superb, Steve Holley from Paul McCartney's Wings, journeyman Andy York, Kinks keyboardist Ian Gibbons, the Look's Gus Goad on bass, and fellow Hoople Mick Ralphs bringing his magic back to Hunter's repertoire.

Excellent CD by ARION, maybe the best Indian harp you can find recorded. It includes two parts: the first with 14 songs from Paraguay and the second with 12 more songs from Venezuela. Both harpists are among the best in their countries with all of their life dedicated to the expertise and virtuosity of their harp playing. Ideal music whenever you feel moody. Frantic and joyful rhythms will flood the room from the very first few notes.
