Two words permeated my first and consequent familiarity with this album; authenticity and authority. The first is in regard to the overall sound. It's pure jazz - and it's GREAT! The sense of authority is due to the masterly musicianship, belying the band's average age of 28. Every note by every instrument counts and contributes. The band is Norwegian - which these days, is almost an automatic qualification of excellence. 'Samspill' is one of those concise Scandinavian hybrid words, which can be loosely translated as 'musical interaction'. It is devotedly presented here - throughout the album. The self-descriptive opening track, Lift Off, is courtesy of Børge-Are Halvorsen.

Dead Lord’s fourth record “Surrender” is a one-stop shop of everything from sweet licks and stylish solos, to simply remarkable catchy songs that hit you in the feels and fill the gas tank to the brim. Stellar guitar rock, fresh and unleashed, as Dead Lord reinvigorates and rewires a long-lost style, rocketing it into a new era with stone-cold future studio classics. Surrender conveys the sense, palpable at the shows, of the magnetic chemistry and rolling thunder the Dead Lord live extravaganza always floors you with. You can hear the fun and fever, feel the crackle and burn of the reels as they capture a rare rock and roll lightning strike, as if you were standing in the wings with the drug-dealers and crazed leather rebels of days gone by.

Founded in 1926 by Roy Crain, The Soul Stirrers were one of the preeminent gospel vocal acts in the U.S. over the next several decades. After many line up changes, a then-unknown Sam Cooke joined the group in 1951, a stint that lasted until his entry into the secular pop world as a solo artist in 1957. Cooke was replaced by Johnnie Taylor (later of “Who’s Making Love” fame), and by 1959 the Soul Stirrers found themselves without a label. Cooke and Crain, along with manager/songwriting partner J.W. Alexander reacted by founding SAR Records, whose first order of business was releasing Taylor-fronted Soul Stirrers recordings as well as selections on which Jimmie Outler took the lead.
