One if not the best small group recordings of Buddy Rich. Noted as primarily a big band jazz drummer, Rich is masterfully comfortable with this small group. The entire group is so tight, there isn't any room for clams. Why they never released the second Argo LP back in the day is beyond me. The guard sessions are also an excellent representation of this great bands' talent! Mainieri's vibes keeps pace well with Buddy and Most and Goldie are superb! If you don't have this material you are in for a treat!

Some performances get talked about decades after they happened. It's all about "you had to be there" and if you would believe all the people who claimed to be present at such a show, the venue would have collapsed. Two of those shows are now released in full. Trumpet maestro Miles Davis performed at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam on April 9 and October 15, 1960. John Coltrane was on sax in April and his replacement Sonny Stitt played in October. With Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Miles Davis was on fire both nights.

Pulsating Stars: A NATURE Reprint

Pulsating Stars: A NATURE Reprint by F. G. Smith , A. Hewish
English | PDF | 1968 | 100 Pages | ISBN : 1489961917 | 18.9 MB

THE discovery of the pulsating radio stars by Miss Jocelyn Bell, working with Dr Hewish at Cambridge, rivals the early classic discoveries of extraterrestrial radio sources in its importance and in its excitement. It may at first have seemed to be a lucky accident that the pulsars, as they are now called, should be detected first in an experiment designed to investigate the solar wind; the fact that for several months after the publica- tion of the discovery no other pulsars had been detected in any other radio observatory shows that the discovery followed naturally on the many years of work that Hewish has put into the study of another type of fluctuating signal, the interplanetary scintillation of discrete radio sources.

Chamber music is a form of classical music that is composed for a small group of instruments—traditionally a group that could fit in a palace chamber or a large room. Most broadly, it includes any art music that is performed by a small number of performers, with one performer to a part (in contrast to orchestral music, in which each string part is played by a number of performers). However, by convention, it usually does not include solo instrument performances.

Under the watchful eye of famed producer Michael Cuscuna, this nine-CD set serves as a compilation of Stitt's 1950s and 1960s Roost LPs. This release also features a 28-page booklet consisting of comprehensively annotated liners. Moreover, the record label does its best to convey the artistic element via a series of black-and-white photos of Stitt and his sidemen amid anecdotes by many of the late saxophonist's affiliates. Interestingly enough, seven of the original LPs did not list personnel. In some instances, guesses were made, although most of these tracks are well-documented, thanks to the producer's diligence and painstaking research. Artists such as drummer Roy Haynes, bassist/composer Charles Mingus, and pianist Harold Maber represent but a few of Stitt's accompanists.
