Blackberry Smoke's southernness is so deeply ingrained that when they knock out an expert homage to Skynyrd, as they do on "I'll Keep Ramblin'," it seems effortless. This is just who they are – they've internalized all their influences – not just the late, lamented Ronnie Van Zant, the Allman Brothers, and Tom Petty, but a bunch of classic rock 45s from the '60s, plus a hint of Crosby, Stills & Nash – and they can kick up a storm and lay down a mellow groove with equal ease.

Her fourth release, “Traverse This Universe”, finds Ms. Sophie Lee reaching beyond her traditional jazz roots with original material written alongside her ukulele and with the help of producer/songwriters Luke Winslow-King, Earl J. Scioneaux, III and Ben Polcer. “Traverse This Universe” features six original compositions and five standards performed by Ms. Sophie Lee’s mainstay Spotted Cat band and showcasing over a dozen talented New Orleans musicians, including Aurora Nealand, Helen Gillet, Charlie Halloran, Khris Royal amongst others. As lagniappe, the album artwork highlights the creative talents of her eight and six year old daughters.

An eclectic, or probably more appropriately, multifaceted album by one of the great sound magicians of New Orleans. The tunes range from ancient spirituals through a dirge, an obscure beguine (correctly named as Touloulou) or Ellington numbers to a Tom Waits song, but any of them sounds timeless in the usual intense presentation of Ms. Nealand and her Royal Roses. Indeed, the work is the current response of the band to the question of why this kind of seemingly outdated music should matter today. Their approach integrates the musical explorations of the last several decades, involving results from jazz, rock and even classical experience. And the outcome is truly spectacular.

The Cinematic Orchestra are back with a definitive new album that explores a timeless question of vital importance in 2019 - what to believe? Founding member Jason Swinscoe and longtime partner Dominic Smith have enlisted album contributions from collaborators old and new: Moses Sumney, Roots Manuva, Heidi Vogel, Grey Reverend (vocalist on Bonobo’s 'First Fires’), Dorian Concept and Tawiah (Mark Ronson, Kindness), Miguel Atwood-Ferguson (Flying Lotus, Anderson Paak, Thundercat, Hiatus Kaiyote) features on strings and photographer and visual artist Brian “B+” Cross collaborated with Swinscoe and Smith on the album’s concept. The record was mixed by multiple Grammy winner Tom Elmhirst (David Bowie, Frank Ocean, Adele) in Jimi Hendrix’s legendary Electric Lady studios.
