A 10-piece band led by trumpeter Josh Lawrence, bassist Jason Fraticelli, and drummer Anwar Marshall, Fresh Cut Orchestra are at the epicenter of Philadelphia’s vibrant but often-overlooked jazz scene, with members popping up in each other’s bands. The group’s debut is anchored by Fraticelli’s panoramic (think Gil Evans) seven-part suite that centers on the continuum of the life cycle. Josh Lawrence’s “Uptown Romance” delves into the jazz tradition, while Marshall’s “Sanguine” is exploratory electric groove jazz at the highest level.
