Brahms was a spirited, fair-haired youth of twenty-one when he composed his first chamber work, essaying the delicate art of the trio for piano and strings. The result was a masterpiece. Quartets, quintets, sextets followed… and many years went by before he returned twice more to the piano trio genre. The horn too was given its own trio, with a part that could be borrowed by the cello. The maturity and life experience he had gained left their mark over the years. The time had come for wisdom, gravity and nostalgia, while the inner passion and fire remained.

For this complete recording of Johannes Brahms' piano trios, the internationally successful Salzburg violinist Thomas Albertus Irnberger chose his usual top-class ensemble partners. Irnberger has long had an intense artistic friendship with the versatile cellist David Geringas, who, like the Russian-born pianist Lilya Zilberstein, can point to a number of recordings that are as long as they are impressive. The Piano Trio No. 1 in B major, Op. 8 can be heard here in the revised version, which closes the time gap of almost 25 years to the other two trios (No. 2 in C major, Op. 87 and No. 3 in C minor, Op. 101), since the revision took place after the completion of these works and thus at the peak of Brahmsian compositional art.
For the Trio for Clarinet, Violoncello and Piano in A minor, Op. 114, Brahms envisaged the viola as an alternative instrumentation from the very beginning, which is mastered by Irnberger as brilliantly as the violin.

The award-winning Greenwich Trio, comprising Slovenian violinist Lana Trotovšek, Canadian cellist Heather Tuach and Japanese pianist Yoko Misumi, makes its debut on Linn with a recording of Brahms Piano Trios. Pairing Op. 36 with Op. 87, this is the first instalment in a complete trios cycle. Although a string sextet in its original Brahmsian guise, Op. 36 was brilliantly arranged for piano trio by Theodor Kirchner, a contemporary and friend of Johannes. The second of Brahms’s three trios, Op. 87 is a mature work which sees the composer at the height of his compositional writing. Its highly Romantic leaning combined with its Classical structure calls for the sort of sharp skills the Greenwich Trio has in abundance. Having delighted audiences throughout Europe (Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, London’s Kings Place, Rheingau Musik Festival, among others) this debut is eagerly-awaited.

Schumann's piano trios are large-scale works, the D minor trio in particular. Its lengthy first movement, which the composer marks "With Energy and Passion", really needs to be played that way, consisting as it does of those long, episodic, non-developing sequences that Schumann for some reason called "sonata form". Don't get me wrong: the music works just fine, but only if it's played with enough sweep and spontaneity that its emotional urgency obliterates its somewhat clunky form. The same holds true for the finale, marked "With Fire". The Vienna Brahms Trio does a good job of conveying the impulsiveness of Schumann's inspiration, and their sense of poetry in the slow movement has just the right "inner" quality.

Award-winning violinist Christian Tetzlaff and pianist Lars Vogt are joined together with Tanja Tetzlaff in this exciting new recording of the Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) Piano Trios. The Brahms Piano Trios belong to the very core of the romantic chamber music repertoire. They span a period from the 1850s (the 1st version of Op. 8) to the 1880s, Op. 101 being completed during the last decade of Brahms' active career as a composer. Piano Trio No. 1 was also revised by the composer as late as in 1889.
