"Capricci del destino", l'ultimo libro pubblicato in vita da Karen Blixen, contiene cinque fra i suoi racconti più significativi. Queste storie ambientate in luoghi diversi (dalla Persia alla Norvegia, alla Cina, alla Danimarca) e tuttavia parallele in quanto costituiscono delle variazioni sul tema del contrasto tra mondo immaginario e mondo reale, tra le umane fantasie e le convenzioni dell'agire quotidiano, appartengono a quella particolarissima sfera in cui l'arte diventa più vera della realtà stessa. Tra i personaggi dei racconti, ricordiamo la figura femminile al centro di "Il pranzo di Babette", la cuoca comunarda che, al crollo dei suoi ideali rivoluzionari, è costretta a sacrificare tutto e a vivere esule (lei, "grande artista") a contatto con un mondo grigio e frugale. Ma il potere visionario di Babette trionfa, paradossalmente e orgogliosamente, sulle miserie della quotidianità.

Ilse Fromm-Michaels (1888 - 1986) was a famous female pianist and composer at the beginning of the 20th century. 1933 she was completely banned from pursuing her career, because she refused to abandon her jewish husband. She was not allowed to perform in public. None of her works could be played or published. The results of this discrimination can be felt up to the present day. (…) Babette Dorn’s solid pianism and excellent musicianship make a convincing case for the revival of Fromm-Michaels’ essentially derivative yet ultimately rewarding keyboard output. Should an enterprising label undertake her 1938 Symphony or Music Larga for clarinet and string quartet, I’ll be there to listen.
