The fact that he has recorded a whole album of music for unaccompanied viola before the age of thirty is a telling indication of the meteoric rise of this prodigious, boundary-pushing artist. As is his choice of contrasting the Baroque era (Telemann and J. S. Bach) with two figures of modern music, in Britten’s rarely heard Elegy and Caroline Shaw’s in manus tuas. A breathtaking ode to the viola over the centuries, played with all the fire of youth!

Wolfram Christ can be a boring performer (witness a deadpan Berlioz Harold in Italy with Maazel), but these works seem to suit him perfectly. The J.C. Bach Concerto (is *that* really J.C. Bach???) is quite splashy, especially witness the final movement. It's very exciting, and definitely worth exploring, with a tuneful first movement, and a lovely second. The first theme of I comes back to haunt in III, making it a "cyclical" work.

Classical / Choral / Concerto / Baroque

JS Bach and Vivaldi s' Magnificat's: desert island repertoire to illustrate the splendour of the orchestra Le Concert des Nations and choir of La Capella Reial de Catalunya. Jordi Savall offers a vivid and striking performance of these two masterpieces, recorded live at the Royal Chapel in Versailles in 2013. Each of them is introduced by a concerto by the same composer in the same tonality. The superlative performance of Pierre Hantaï in the Concerto BWV1052 is another jewel to the crown of this album. The bonus DVD features both Magnificats and Bach s Concerto.

This musical project was born in the very first meeting with Luca Guglielmi, the night before a concert in Geneva when, through the music of J. S. Bach, a sincere human and musical affinity was revealed that needed neither words nor looks. Now, at a distance of a time made fluid by the hours of listening to the tracks, I see that we had met in Bach's profound italianness, in the singing of the melodies that danced in counterpoint, in the rhythmic undulation of his writing, but above all in the composer's human and eternal spirituality.

The present recording brings together music by Johann Sebastian Bach with works by his students Carl Friedrich Abel and Johann Ludwig Krebs, composers who were not only friends and associates of Bach, but also members of families with which Bach was closely connected. These pieces show the many ways in which Bach was connected to his students, including writing music for them to perform, aiding them in finding employment, and promoting their music.

The poetry and radiance of Bach's Cello Suites (BWV 1007-1012) are transfigured in these remarkable interpretations by Kim Kashkashian on viola, offering "a different kind of sombreness, a different kind of dazzlement" as annotator Paul Griffiths observes.

With The Melancholic Bach, Emilio Moreno delves pensively and wistfully into the realms of the music that Bach might have written for the viola. This new Glossa album is in fact, by turns, a reflective but also an uplifting treat from beginning to end. Moreno, of course, is a violinist as well as a violist: with the former he has been directing his ensembles La Real Cámara and El Concierto Español, whilst with the latter instrument for many years he has been leading the violas of Orchestra of the 18th Century.
