Recorded in the inspirational surroundings of The Cobbe Collection of early keyboard instruments in England's Hatchlands Park, the celebrated early keyboardist Menno van Delft makes his Resonus solo debut with J.S. Bach's six keyboard Partitas – the first part of Bach's Clavier-Ubung series of keyboard works. Using an original 1784 instrument by Christian Gotthelf Hoffmann (one of only two remaining clavichords from this maker), van Delft makes a compelling case for performing these works on Bach's most favoured keyboard instrument.

The French harpsichordist Céline Frisch has an extensive discography, including many award-winning recordings devoted to Bach. Now she presents the Partitas, the famous and abundant collection of six suites that Bach composed from 1726 onwards - at the rate of one new partita per year - which he published as his Opus 1: As Céline Frisch points out, “Bach explores the possibilities of each dance in order to extend its limits deploying an intense expressive palette that ranges from the most disarming tenderness through to the most poignant distress and unbridled joy”.

David Fray, described as “perhaps the most inspired, certainly the most original Bach-player of his generation,” launched his Virgin Classics career with Bach and this is his third album to feature the composer’s keyboard music. “We shouldn’t be afraid of acknowledging the expressiveness of Bach’s music,” says Fray. “The Romantics don’t have a monopoly on expressivity!”

Finnish guitarist Timo Korhonen has already released his own arrangements of Bach’s solo violin sonatas. Now he turns his attention to the partitas and gives fascinating interpretations of these bottomless works. Any guitarist transcribing Bach has to contend with the spirit of Segovia but Korhonen manages convincingly to carve his own path in this music, even if he doesn’t quite shake off the shade of the Spanish master.

Feng says of the album: “Bach’s solo works have always been a part of my musical life … and I started recording these masterworks… to pay my tribute to the greatest musician of all time.”

Hilary Hahn is among the world's greatest violinists of her or, arguably, any generation. She is one of those rare artists who possess both a colossal technique and interpretive acumen to set them apart from most of their rivals. Hahn had a major recording contract at 16, was named Best Young Classical Musician at 21 by Time Magazine, and by her mid-20s was generally ranked as one of the finest violinists in the world. Her repertory is broad, taking in many of the standards by J.S. Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Spohr, Paganini, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, and Barber. But she also plays a few works from the byways of the repertory, including the concertos of Schoenberg and contemporary American composer Edgar Meyer. Hahn declares a preference for Bach, expressing a deep reverence for his music while playing many of his works for solo violin, as well as concertos.

Gould rejected most of the standard Romantic piano literature by Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, and others, in favour of Bach and Beethoven mainly, along with some late-Romantic and modernist composers.
