Tenor virtuoso Bob Berg teams up with (a.o) Dennis Chambers and Mike Stern to create an album with a combination of heavy fusion and jazz ballads. The album was a 1991 Grammy Nominee and in this case, that really was for a good reason. Bob Berg shows the duality which modern jazz saxophone players strive to achieve: being able to play funkfusion as well as jazz. Bob Berg does both exceptionally well.

Si Back Roads est si bon, ce n'est pas uniquement parce qu'il vient de Lyon ni parce qu'il est propulsé par l'organe de feu d'une chanteuse, Sylvaine, digne des plus grandes tigresses, mais surtout parce qu'il a (re)trouvé la formule magique d'un hard rock à la fois bluesy et râpeux dont les racines seventies lui confèrent une patine chaudement authentique sans faire de lui un groupe vintage ou garage de plus. Son art possède tout simplement ce qu'on appelle une âme, loin de ces banales photocopies du passé aussi jouissives soient-elles.
