Cherry Red affiliate Superbird pairs Bar-Kays' first two albums for Mercury, the label to which the band defected after a long and productive run with Stax. Both recordings reached the Top Ten of Billboard's R&B albums chart. Too Hot to Stop, released in 1976, features the singles "Shake Your Rump to the Funk," "Too Hot to Stop," and "Spellbound," while Flying High on Your Love spawned "Let's Have Some Fun" and "Attitudes." Comparable to what their P-Funk brothers and sisters were releasing at the time, these are two of the band's most enjoyable albums, though they're not without a fair amount of filler. This is a straight-up two-for-one compilation with no bonus tracks.

For the very first time you can now get your hands on a definitive collection of the funk and soul sensation that is The Bar-Kays. Robinsongs are proud to be the first label to combine the Warner Brothers, Volt, Stax and Mercury repertoire to make this a unique compilation that covers the period from 1967 through 1989. The package features every single one of their Top 10 R&B Hits. Other tracks of note included in this package are 'Let's Have Some Fun', 'Dirty Dancer', 'Attitudes' and the full-length album version of 'Money Talks' plus the dance floor smash 'Sexomatic'. The history of the Bar-Kays is one of tragedy and triumph, plane crash to Gold Discs, Otis Redding to Isaac Hayes, which is all wonderfully summed up in a 24 page color booklet including an essay by Christian John Wikane, a New York based music journalist with contributions by the band's former front man Larry Dodson.

The only career-spanning collection we've ever seen on The Bar-Kays – and a set that does a mighty nice job of hitting all the right bases! The group first rose to fame as a funk combo on Stax in the late 60s – then shifted a bit after part of the group was killed in the same plane crash that took the life of Otis Redding – a tragedy that soon saw the group rising from the ashes, and sounding even better than before! Their sound was a huge part of the Stax Records funk sound of the early 70s – and the group took that groove over to Mercury once the decade got going – where they found a very welcome home, and the perfect environment to perfect their ultra-sharp talents.

For those looking to find a crash course in "the funk" – a quick introduction to the fusion of R&B, soul, jazz, blues, good old rock & roll, and all-out outrageousness that creates the ultimate good groove – you can't do much better than the Funk Essentials compilations. Funky Stuff: The Best of Funk Essentials is the perfect portrait. With its contents drawn from the single-band Funk Essentials compilation albums, this clean, clear set provides incredible diversity while keeping the vibe connected. In other words, Funky Stuff is not only an introduction to the heaviest of hitters, but also a nifty, smooth ride for the already initiated.

Cherry Red's Robinsongs division combines a pair of late-'70s Mercury albums by the Bar-Kays: 1978's "Light of Life" and 1979's "Injoy". Given the band's extensive discography (including a Stax-released 1978 album with an incredible re-recording of "Holy Ghost"), these releases have fallen by the wayside, but both of them fared well. The former reached #15 on Billboard's album chart, while the latter missed the top spot by one position. There's a handful of notable singles and deep album cuts, including the charting A-sides "Shine" and "I'll Dance," as well as "Move Your Boogie Body" and the ballad "Running in and Out of My Life."

Gold: Old School Jams Review by Andy Kellman
The terrain sampled here has been trod upon hundreds of times. However, since this double-disc set is part of Hip-O/Universal's Gold series, it shouldn't be disregarded on first sight. While anyone with a basic collection of funk, post-disco, or any other forms of club-oriented R&B spanning the '70s through the first half of the '80s will likely have a good percentage of the tracks on Old School Jams, a few gaps are bound to be plugged, and the sound quality is such that you might be able to replace some of those lower-budget discs you picked up during the late '80s and early '90s. Another winning factor is that the longer 12" mixes are often used instead of single edits. Oft-compiled hits like the Commodores' "Brick House," Rick James' "Super Freak," and Rose Royce's "Car Wash" are balanced with tracks that never seem to get their due, like Teena Marie's "I'm Just a Sucker for Your Love" (at least not compared to "Behind the Groove" or "Square Biz"), Mary Jane Girls' "All Night Long," and Bobby Nunn's "She's Just a Groupie."

Funk is a music genre that originated in African American communities in the mid-1960s when African American musicians created a rhythmic, danceable new form of music through a mixture of soul music, jazz, and rhythm and blues (R&B). Funk de-emphasizes melody and chord progressions used in other related genres and brings a strong rhythmic groove of a bass line played by an electric bassist and a drum part played by a drummer to the foreground.

I Got Funk’ is a Funk playlist from the 70s. The selection starts with ‘The Payback’ from James Brown. It’s a hypnotic, minimalist, heavy funk piece with a slow tempo and a staggering bass, drum and guitar trio. The James Brown influence concludes with 3 solo songs from some of his sidemen (Maceo, Fred Wesley & Bobby Byrd) where the horns are omnipresent and enhance this ultra-funky groove. In a more Jazz-Funk oriented feeling we find the classic ‘Do it fluid’ from the Blackbyrds and the Black Heat, with an Afro-Funk influenced track from their first album. The beatmakers will surely appreciate ‘It’s a new day’ from the Skull Snaps for their drum break sampled over 400 times! The track ‘Jungle boogie’ from Kool & the gang relates to the Quentin Tarantino movie ‘Pulp fiction’, but the band is also playing ‘Sport’ by Lightnin’ Rod.
