"Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?" is a Batman story published in two parts, in the "final" issues of the series and , released in February and April 2009, respectively. Written by Neil Gaiman, pencilled by Andy Kubert, and inked by Scott Williams, the story is purported to be the "last" Batman story in the wake of severe psychological trauma that Batman endures within the "Batman R.I.P." story, and his ultimate fate in "Final Crisis". The story's title is a reference to the backup stories published in from the early 1970s to the mid-1980s (which revisited various long-unused Golden Age and Silver Age characters; these stories were all titled "Whatever Happened to (x)?"). The Batman presented in the story is not necessarily the one from current DC Universe continuity but rather an indeterminate amalgamation that pays homage to the entirety of the character's 70-year history. Neil Gaiman, who jumped at the chance to script this story, and artist Andy Kubert who, through his marvelous evocative artwork that pays tribute to the greatest artists to ever work on the Dark Knight, have lovingly crafted a subtle, theoretical look at post-Batman Gotham that, albeit reminiscent of certain previous DC publications, is nonetheless superlative for its wonderfully entertaining and totally engrossing homage to The Caped Crusader's life and times. Amazing and incredible, and imho stands alongside Alan Moore's "last" Superman story "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?".

Written by Dennis O'Neil; Art by Joe Quesada and Kevin Nowlan. Dennis O'Neal is perhaps most well known for turning Batman from the campiness of the 1960s TV show, to "The Batman", getting back to the character's darker roots and emphasizing his detective skills. This grimer and more sophisticated Dark Knight, as well as new villians such as Ra's Al Ghul, brought back Batman from the verge of pop culture oblivion. His work would influence later incarnations of Batman, from the seminal comic by Frank Miller, to the movie in 2005. Stands right up there among the best origin tales in the Batman mythos.

The plot centers on a series of murders involving Gotham City police officers by a mysterious serial killer only known as The Hangman and how James Gordon and Batman deal with it. Central to the storyline is a territory war between Two-Face and the remnants of the Falcone mob, led by Sofia Falcone. The story is also a re-telling of the origins of Batman's sidekick Robin and his adoption by Bruce Wayne. The story brings closure to many characters introduced in Frank Miller's . The series is preceded by a Wizard issue #0 that serves as prologue and that smoothly segues from to the start of the storyline in issue #1. Critical reception to has been positive throughout, though there is general agreement that in terms of artistic and literary achievement it falls short of the lofty standards set by . Nevertheless, it now stands among the best and greatest of Batman stories, proof of which is its listing by IGN as #8 on the list of the 25 best Batman graphic novels (issues#1-13 was published as a trade paperback).

IGN Comics ranked number 2 on a list of the 25 greatest Batman graphic novels, second only to , another Frank Miller work on the character. The website called "a true masterpiece of storytelling" with "scene after unforgettable scene." In 2005, Time chose the collected four-issues as one of the 10 best English language graphic novels ever written.
