American composer Carlos Simon presents a multi-genre work, Requiem for the Enslaved. This work is a musical tribute to commemorate the stories of 272 enslaved men, women and children sold in 1838 by Georgetown University. Described as a "rap opera," Carlos infuses his original compositions with African American spirituals and familiar Catholic liturgical melodies.

Andreas Resch is one of the two members of the legendary (Hyperium Records signed) artist Mynox Layh. With 'Requiem', Andrea returns with a sinister work of morbid atmospheres, and obscure ambiences.
The music of "../Requiem" still retains certain elements of what made Mynox Layh such a great group but with his own inimitable style incorporated throughout. "../Requiem" consists of nineteen tracks , named "../Requiem No 1" through to "../Requiem No 15", with four additional tracks from a short film ‘Orphea’ directed by the man himself. Describing the music on this CD is quite a tricky proposition if you haven’t heard anything by Mynox Layh before…

Using a polyphonic musical language that draws on medieval Byzantine chant, Petros Petridis can be considered one of the most important proponents of the Greek National School. The Requiem for the Emperor Constantine Palaiologos mourns the end of the Byzantine Empire with elegiac lyricism culminating in an ultimately uplifting finale. The Third Symphony is a musical tribute to France, Petridis’s adopted home, while the Concerto grosso enriches an older form with contemporary colour. All of these works are eminently representative of this composer’s significant aesthetic and creative achievements.

1791: a busy year for Mozart who, when he received a commission for a Requiem, was already working on Die Zauberflöte and had a deadline to deliver La clemenza di Tito. Everyone knows what happened next: the commission postponed, exhaustion and death, a work left unfinished and which, after several composers were approached, was finally completed by Süssmayr. This version gradually became established as the closest to Mozart’s intentions, but is not free of faulty part-writing and orchestration.

This recording was made in the Church of San Marco in Milan on 16 October 2016, within the 2014-15 institutional season of the Mozart Italy-Milan Association. Despite the imperfections that this type of recording entails, in an era of studio recordings, the uniqueness of the document combined with the rare artistic quality made it possible to decide to keep the original sound. Between 1961 and 1986, Herbert von Karajan made three recordings of the Mozart Requiem for Deutsche Grammophon, with little change in his conception of the piece over the years. This recording, from 1975, is, on balance, the best of them. The approach is Romantic, broad, and sustained, marked by a thoroughly homogenized blend of chorus and orchestra, a remarkable richness of tone, striking power, and an almost marmoreal polish. Karajan viewed the Requiem as idealized church music rather than a confessional statement awash in operatic expressiveness. In this account, the orchestra is paramount, followed in importance by the chorus, then the soloists. Not surprisingly, the singing of the solo quartet sounds somewhat reined-in, especially considering these singers' pedigrees. By contrast, the Vienna Singverein, always Karajan's favorite chorus, sings with a huge dynamic range and great intensity, though with an emotional detachment nonetheless. Perfection, if not passion or poignancy, is the watchword. The Berlin orchestra plays majestically, and the sound is pleasingly vivid.
