First rule of greatest-hits albums: start things off with a bang, not a song that takes about a minute to get off the ground, and about 80 seconds before the vocals kick in. "Carousel" may be a chronologically accurate way to begin blink-182's Greatest Hits, yet it gets things off to a slow start but then again, blink-182 hardly sped out of the gate themselves. It took them a long time to get up to speed it wasn't until their third album, 1997's Dude Ranch, that they developed a flair for sugary pop hooks, as evidenced by that album's "Dammit," not just their first big hit, but their first memorable song. It was enough to buy them a ticket to the big leagues and their next album, 1999's Enema of the State, turned into a blockbuster, thanks to the crossover Top Ten hit "All the Small Things," an incessantly catchy, irresistible slice of bubblegum-pop that sounded at ease sandwiched between *NSYNC and Britney Spears on Y2K radio.

Multiplatinum Pop Punk band blink-182 released their newest album "California" last summer featuring their new vocalist, Matt Skiba. The album reached the number 1 spot on many charts, including the Billboard 200, the US Top Alternative albums, the US Top Rock albums and so on. A few months ago, the guys broke news that they would be re-releasing the album as a deluxe edition. This expanded edition will not have just a few extra tracks, but a whopping 12 brand new tracks that apparently didn't make the initial cut. The album will be re-released with the full 28 tracks on May 19th through Viking Wizard Eyes.

blink-182 have announced their eighth studio album, which is confusingly called NINE. (Are they counting The Mark, Tom & Travis Show, or is this a bit?) The group posted the title to their social media today with the release date of September 20. Since May, the band has released three singles will be included in the album’s 15-song tracklist: “Blame It On My Youth,” “Generational Divide,” and most recently, “Happy Days.”

Terrific sales of their independent Cheshire Cat got Blink-182 signed to a major label (MCA) for 1997's Dude Ranch, which led to radio hits ("Dammit," "Josie") and platinum sales. No "sell-out" on the band's part, though, as Dude Ranch simply features another infectious collection of snotty vocals, punchy rhythms, vivid lyrics, and aggressive chords. San Diego producer Mark Trombino shines some of the scuffed edges, but this is still good ol' Blink at its sunny, effervescent best. Nice "emocore" spoof here ("Emo"), plus an odd knack for crafting bass-lines that recall–seriously!–New Order, and vocal harmonies that owe debts to the Beach Boys.

Awash in a neon rainbow and increasingly pop-leaning production, blink-182's aptly named Nine proves that looks can be deceiving. Despite the colorful album cover, this is one of blink's darkest albums to date. Depression, self-doubt, fear, and frustration lurk beneath the trio's trademark sound and, upon closer inspection of the lyrics, Nine's loudness and energy become better suited for catharsis and bloodletting than simple pop-punk rollicking and mischief. When frontman Mark Hoppus cries "I wanna feel happy days" on the deceptively titled "Happy Days," it's just one of many moments on Nine where his struggles with mental health are brought to the fore.
