Goodbye surfing, hello God! The title of Jules Siegel's 1967 magazine feature on Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys sums up how well the group was outliving the early-'60s beach fad – and revolutionizing pop music in the process. During 1966, the twin shots of Pet Sounds in May and "Good Vibrations" in October announced first that the group had entered the vanguard of pop music and then, not content with mere critical praise, seized control of the singles charts with a chart-topper as catchy as it was complex and costly to record. Early on, though, "Good Vibrations" had actually been slated to appear on Pet Sounds, which reveals the long odds on whether Wilson could ever finish an entire album of his pocket symphonies (at least, in the time frame of a label circa 1966)…

The Secret Smile is a 2004 collection of tracks The Beach Boys did in 1967 for their Smile album, an album that was to be their follow-up to Pet Sounds but Brian Wilson allegedly lost his mind and ended up fading to the unknown for awhile. There are countless bootlegs from the Smile sessions but this is one of them, with a total of 59 tracks. No label is listed for this title.

Beginning their career as the most popular surf band in the nation, the Beach Boys finally emerged by 1966 as America's preeminent pop group, the only act able to challenge (for a brief time) the overarching success of the Beatles with both mainstream listeners and the critical community. From their 1961 debut with the regional hit "Surfin'," the three Wilson brothers - Brian, Dennis, and Carl - plus cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine constructed the most intricate, gorgeous harmonies ever heard from a pop band. With Brian's studio proficiency growing by leaps and bounds during the mid-'60s, the Beach Boys also proved one of the best-produced groups of the '60s, exemplified by their 1966 peak with the Pet Sounds LP and the number one single "Good Vibrations"…

Released in conjunction with the Beach Boys documentary Endless Harmony, this rarities collection contains previously unreleased Beach Boys songs, rehearsals, demos, alternate takes, and live performances. It certainly wasn't an album for casual fans, but Beach Boys obsessives found a treasure trove of stuff to drool over, including previously unheard Brian Wilson compositions like "Soulful Old Man Sunshine" and "Sail Plane Song," as well as a demo of "Heroes and Villains" on which Wilson abruptly shifts to snatches of material intended for the never-released Smile project. The later tracks on the album were given over to contributions from the other Beach Boys, and these included Mike Love's "Brian's Back" (from 1978 sessions for a solo album he never released) and two previously unheard Dennis Wilson songs, one of which was the lovely "Barbara."
