The Beaux Arts Trio's 1964 recordings of Ludwig van Beethoven's "Archduke" and "Ghost" trios have long been staples in the catalog, despite being superseded in 1979 by more polished recordings. To avoid confusion, the 2013 reissue in the Virtuoso series on Decca is merely a repackaging of the 1964 Philips sessions, which also include the early "Gassenhauer" Trio.

Dutch musicians are different. They are absolutely objective, but deeply passionate; completely faithful to the letter of the score, but totally in touch with the spirit behind the score; wholly dedicated to their ensemble, but profoundly individualistic in their expression. In these ways, the Storioni Trio is the epitome of Dutch music-making. On this disc, the Storioni Trio fully inhabits not only the late eighteenth century world of Beethoven's early E flat major Trio Op. 1/2, but also the early nineteenth century world of Beethoven's later D major Trio, Op. 70/1, nicknamed the "Ghost."

Renaud Capuçon, Gautier Capuçon and Frank Braley, well established as chamber-music partners, perform two of Beethoven’s greatest piano trios, the ‘Ghost’ and the ‘Archduke’. “Together, all three musicians have the quality that is the most priceless of all in playing chamber music,” wrote The Guardian when the Capuçons and Braley played the ‘Archduke’ at London’s Wigmore Hall, “they listen intently to each other and always take note of what they do. Their account of the Archduke Trio … had a tremendous sense of organic coherence.”

Trio Wanderer While their name derives from Schubert's song Der Wanderer, D. 493, and their sympathies lie with German Romanticism in general, the Trio Wanderer has performed a broad range of works lying outside the Germanic sphere, including compositions by Smetana, Dvorák, Saint-Saëns, Debussy, Bartók, Martinu, Copland, Messiaen, as well as contemporary composers. Of course, this popular piano trio has lived up to the spirit of its name, too, with regular performance of works by Beethoven, Hummel, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Brahms, and other German Romantics, not to mention those who augured Romanticism like Haydn and Mozart.

Longtime chamber-music companions, Braley and the string-playing Capuçon brothers, give us Beethoven’s most popular piano trios in recordings of power and poetry. Braley’s commanding piano playing underpins the performances with a wonderfully firm foundation over which the two Capuçons, playing as one, can weave their magic. “Ghost”—named after its spooky, slow movement—is beautifully judged and played with a fine sense of line. The more imperious “Archduke” is also done terrifically, the chorale-like “Andante cantabile” drawing out some exquisitely balanced chamber musicianship from this French trio, while the finale has a real spring in its step.

The events of Beethoven's life are the stuff of Romantic legend, evoking images of the solitary creator shaking his fist at Fate and finally overcoming it through a supreme effort of creative will. His compositions, which frequently pushed the boundaries of tradition and startled audiences with their originality and power, are considered by many to be the foundation of 19th century musical principals.

A precocious child, Argerich began nursery aged two years and eight months, where she was the youngest child. A five-year-old boy, who was a friend, teased her that she would not be able to play the piano, and Argerich responded by playing perfectly, by ear, a piece their teacher played them. The teacher immediately called the mother and they "started making a fuss." She started learning the piano at the age of three. At the age of five, she moved to teacher Vincenzo Scaramuzza, who stressed to her the importance of lyricism and feeling. Argerich gave her debut concert in 1949 at the age of eight. The family moved to Europe in 1955, where Argerich studied with Friedrich Gulda in Austria, whom Argerich describes as one of her major influences. She later studied with Stefan Askenase and Maria Curcio. Argerich also seized opportunities for brief periods of coaching with Madeleine Lipatti (widow of Dinu Lipatti), Abbey Simon, and Nikita Magaloff. In 1957, at sixteen, she won both the Geneva International Music Competition and the Ferruccio Busoni International Competition within three weeks of each other. Following this success, Argerich had a personal and artistic crisis; she did not play the piano for three years and considered giving it up to train as a secretary or doctor. She credited Anny Askenase (the wife of Stefan Askenase) with encouraging her to return to the piano.
