Being as an Ocean

Being as an Ocean is an American post-hardcore band from Alpine, California, formed in 2011. They have released three studio albums: Dear G-d…, How We Both Wondrously Perish and a self-titled album released on June 29, 2015. How We Both Wondrously Perish was released in May 2014 and charted at number 57 on the Billboard 200 in the U.S.

In the earliest part of 2019, the Eclectic Prog band Echotest from Philadelphia released it's 3rd album "Daughter of Ocean". Echotest was founded in 2014 by Julie Slick, who was the bassist for the "Adrian Belew Power Trio". The regular band is made up of Slick on bass and electronics, Marco Machera also on bass but also electronics and vocals, Jennifer Founds on vocals and Alessandro Inolti on drums. Other guests appear on various tracks on this album. The album is made up of 10 tracks and has a total run time of 57 minutes. The sound is very unique and not always what you expect, leaning to a more avant- prog sound many times through the album. Sometimes the sound is very beautiful and other times a bit unsettling, but it is always quite unique.

The nine-track album pulls tracks from 2003’s Ocean Avenue (title track, “Only One”), 2006’s Lights And Sounds (“Waiting Game”), 2007’s Paper Walls (“You And Me And One Spotlight”), 2012’s Southern Air (title track, “Telescope”), 2014’s Lift A Sail (“Transmission Home”) and 2016’s Yellowcard (“Empty Street”, “A Place We Set Fire”). “It is such an honor to have worked on ‘A Hopeful Sign’ with such talented humans, and this record will be something we cherish forever,” says Ryan.

This album was created 4 years after 'Icesteps' and was rightly hailed by many as his most inspired work to date. Considering the quality of his previous albums, the fact that he seems to "raise the ante" with each release is amazing. Glyn's previous works displayed his uncanny ability to harmonise sequences with breathtaking melodies. 'Ocean of Serenity' continues this approach and the title track, like so much of Glyn's work, is based around a stunningly beautiful yet simple theme which manifests itself in many guises. The opening refrains build to a climax then relax to a solitude which initially hints at, then leads into, the sequenced section.
