Harry Bellafonte was a vocalist known for folk songs & calypso who was born in New York & spent his childhood in Jamaica. This is a recording of the charity concert held in April 1959, when Bellafonte was in his early 30s. He is backed by an orchestra conducted by Robert Coman (Robert Decormier), who used Norman Keenan’s contrabass, as well as guitar & Latin percussion ensembles. When the Japanese LP record was released for the 1st time, RCA Victor (USA) supplied a 2-track, 15 ips analogue master tape. As a result of repeated listening, it was decided that this was the best of various master tapes, so it was used for the SACD too. Sony Music Studio engineer, Yuta Nakamura transferred the tapes to 24bit/96kHz PCM, then Koji Suzuki, another engineer at Sony Music Studio did the mastering from this PCM for the LP & SACD.

An actor, humanitarian, and the acknowledged "King of Calypso," Harry Belafonte ranked among the most seminal performers of the postwar era. One of the most successful African-American pop stars in history, Belafonte's staggering talent, good looks, and masterful assimilation of folk, jazz, and worldbeat rhythms allowed him to achieve a level of mainstream eminence and crossover popularity virtually unparalleled in the days before the advent of the civil rights movement – a cultural uprising which he himself helped spearhead.

1959 saw the release of Harry Belafonte's landmark concert recording at Carnegie Hall, one of the most artistically and commercially successful live albums ever. Belafonte returned to Carnegie Hall in 1960, and released a second live album in much the same mold as the first. Surprisingly–or perhaps not so surprisingly given Belafonte's endless talent and charisma—„Belafonte Returns to Carnegie Hall Live“ is almost as wonderful as its predecessor.

tan Getz made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1949 as part of a superstar bill that included the Woody Herman Orchestra, Nat "King" Cole, and Harry Belafonte. (Getz played in the saxophone section of the band, often referred to as Woody Herman's Second Herd.) He was already a Carnegie Hall regular when he joined forces with Brazilian guitarist and whispering vocalist João Gilberto for the live followup to their groundbreaking Getz/Gilberto album released just seven months before their October 1964 concert. Gilberto had made his debut two years previously as part of the now famous Bossa Nova at Carnegie Hall concert—in which Getz also starred—that sparked the explosion of bossa nova in the US.

Blues, Folk

Odetta (born Odetta Holmes) was an important and unique element in the great American folk revival in the early 1960s. Unique because her musical influences came almost entirely from Anglo-Saxon folk roots rather than blues and gospel of her African-American heritage. As a performer she was a major influence over Harry Belafonte, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and more! She also counted Dr Martin Luther King amongst her very important fans. This 2CD set features live performances from Carnegie Hall and Greenwich Village clubs and includes her only UK hit, a duet with Harry Belafonte on a version of "There's A Hole In My Bucket".
