Over the span of his storied and still-unfolding 65-year career, Sonny Rollins has established himself as one of the giants of jazz — a towering influence, a trailblazer, a powerfully creative force in the music. From his earliest masterpieces, such as Saxophone Colossus and Freedom Suite, to his Road Shows archival series of live performances for his Doxy label in the 2000s, Rollins has presented his peerless music without compromise — and to consistent international acclaim. The new CD contains six tracks recorded between 2001 and 2012 in Saitama, Japan; Toulouse, Marseille, and Marciac, France; and St. Louis. “Patanjali,” a striking new Rollins composition, is given its debut recording.

In the run-up to the 1972 elections, Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward covers what seems to be a minor break-in at the Democratic Party National headquarters. He is surprised to find top lawyers already on the defense case, and the discovery of names and addresses of Republican fund organizers on the accused further arouses his suspicions. The editor of the Post is prepared to run with the story and assigns Woodward and Carl Bernstein to it. They find the trail leading higher and higher in the Republican Party, and eventually into the White House itself.

In February Toccata Classics is releasing the first-ever album of piano music by the American composer Marc Blitzstein (1905–64), played by the man whom Leonard Bernstein called ‘Blitzstein’s dybbuk’, the pianist-composer Leonard Lehrman. Leonard and his wife, the soprano Helene Williams, will be passing through London on their way to a premiere of one of Leonard's works in Germany, and so we grabbed them for an album launch – and their first-ever appearance in London. They'll present some of the music in the new release as well as some songs and piano pieces that Blitzstein wrote in London – all of them, almost certainly, first performances in the UK. Join us for what promises to be an unusual and entertaining evening. Drinks and nibbles as usual.

A graceful, low-key session from a trumpeter capable of much more aggressive work, Hoop Dreams puts Joe Magnarelli in front of a mellow rhythm section anchored by the reflective pianist Gary Versace, with occasional cool, Joe Pass-style guitar lines by Peter Bernstein. This lineup would tempt many players to turn lackadaisical, but even on the slowest, most relaxed arrangements of these ten tracks (such as the lovely, glacially paced take on the Ben Webster standard "Old Folks"), Magnarelli gooses things along with short, crisply played melodic lines and fleet solos that give Hoop Dreams a pep missing from some similar small-combo lineups. Most interestingly, however, Magnarelli uses this lineup to pay tribute to Thelonious Monk, offering intriguing reinterpretations of "Monk's Mood," "Ask Me Now," and "I Mean You" that turn Monk's familiar spiky melodic lines into unexpectedly pretty ruminations that are a perfect fit with the relaxed, late-night vibe of Hoop Dreams. ~ AllMusic Review by Stewart Mason

The gifted guitarist combines energy, ideas and undeniable chops. A remarkable talent and a welcome new voice on the scene.” Bill Milkowski, DownBeat Magazine
“Mr. Sivan runs through the music with natural confidence. He’s not spare. He plays a lot of notes. But he is quiet: almost always quieter than someone with this much training and musicality tends to be, and this is what makes him more than a very good young guitar player” Ben Ratliff, New York Times
