The trio with Spanish bassist Antonio Miguel and Canadian drummer Owen Howard has been an invariant in the life of Berlin based pianist Benedikt Jahnel. Hence the album title: "The Invariant" is issued as the group goes on tour to celebrate its tenth anniversary as a working unit. The opening track Further Consequences picks up where the critically-lauded Equilibrium left off, extending ideas about pianistic patterning and textural playing. Like many of Jahnel's tunes an odd-metered piece, it also contains elements of swing in its solo sections, as the pianist reacts to the implications of Owen Howard's drumming. A distinctive and original pianist, Jahnel is also a prolific writer and The Invariant pools the best of many pieces he has composed, road-tested and revised in the last five years, incorporating the dynamic responses of his trio partners into the fabric of the musical material.

"Equilibrium“ is the ECM debut of a German/Canadian/Spanish trio, which through frequent touring has grown into a remarkably tight and stylistically unique unit in recent years. Fuelled by the tension created through the contrasting styles of pianist Benedikt Jahnel (whose approach is characterised by an unusual interest in rhythmic subdivisions) and drummer Howard (who, in Jahnels words, “treats and perceives rhythmic phrases as melodical lines without fixed micro units”), and with bass player Antonio Miguel often the musical mediator, the group’s sound draws subtly from classical influences as well as contemporary concepts of groove. Leader Jahnel, also known as a member of Cyminology, has sharpened his profile playing with the Metropol Orchestra, Phil Woods, Johannes Enders, Charlie Mariano, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Dave Liebman and John Abercrombie.

The trio with Spanish bassist Antonio Miguel and Canadian drummer Owen Howard has been an “invariant” in the life of Berlin-based pianist Benedikt Jahnel, “a constant in a transformational period” as he puts it, and new album The Invariant is issued as the players reach their tenth anniversary as a working unit.

German-Iranian singer Cymin Samawatie and her band Cyminology continue on their unique course, allowing the subtle yet dynamic sounds and rhythms of Persian poetry to influence their compositions and improvisation. "Phoenix" is their third disc for ECM, like its predecessors produced by Manfred Eicher at Oslo’s Rainbow Studio.

This is the third release for ECM from the German-Iranian vocalist, Cymin Samawatie with her band Cyminology with an intriguing and exquisite set that fuses Persian poetry and rhythms with improvisation along with the musicians own diverse influences and cultural background. The music itself is most absorbing with subtle melodies and delicate rhythms rubbing alongside and against the Persian verse. This is a beautiful album that quite rightly defies simple classification, and why not. For the listener with open ears there is much to enjoy.

TRICHOME is back with seven songs on the new album "Parallel Universe". The Trichrome Trio, led by Nesin Howannesijan (bass) with Benedikt Jahnel on piano and Diego Pinera on drums, is characterised by exceptionally complex rhythmic and melodic structures. On this evening, three great musicians interweave their own compositions with those of some French jazz pianists who were active between 1940 and 1960.

When a young jazz musician composes a suite and calls it 'Berlin Kaboom!', it calls to mind the many young guns in the German capital's jazz scene. Saxophonist Max von Mosch, who does exactly this with his first own ACT album, has only lived in Berlin for two years, and despite being just 33 years of age, he is already an old hand and figurehead of German jazz.
