The second instalment of the complete keyboard works by Johann Wilhelm Hässler. Johann Wilhem Hässler lived from 1742 to 1822, the transition of the Baroque to the Classical era. His style embraces the Empfindsamkeit initiated by W.F. Bach and C.Ph.E. Bach and the heritage of J.S.Bach. These different idioms perfectly coexist to create his complex language, however, Hässler progressively abandoned the baroque heritage to develop a more modern style embracing a more classical aesthetic. The works on these 4 CD`s clearly mark the stylistic development of Hässler, from Baroque polyphony and counterpoint to the graceful classical language in Haydn style.

The first recording of the 12 sonatas Op. 1 and 2 by Nichelmann. Christoph Nichelmann, German composer mand keyboard virtuoso, is said to have studied with Johann Sebastian Bach. This is clearly audible in his keyboard sonatas, which follow the contrapuntal Baroque style and instrumental flourish of his master. However, the publication year of 1745 already hints at further developments in terms of style and expression: certain harmonic experiments and emotional outbursts already foreshadow the Sturm und Drang style of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.

Johann Wilhelm Hässler was a great and famous keyboard virtuoso in the second half of the 18th century. His style forms a bridge between the Baroque and the early Classical era, a period of “Sturm und Drang”, highly virtuosic and extravagant in its expression of feelings and character. Harpsichordist Michele Benuzzi undertook thorough research into this music, some of which was formerly attributed to Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, before he prepared the present edition, as well as writing the extremely informative liner notes. Played on a magnificent historic 18th century instrument from the Russell Collection in Edinburgh. New Premiere Recording.
